Haven't been following the thread for a while but here's one consideration. If you keep dirty pages around until checkpoint then it will also take a longer time for pages to be able to be moved to hiperpool. As a result you will need a larger virtual pool. In a lot of installations I've worked with, hiperpools are a good way to reduce the virtual storage requirement of DBM1. [...]

But again, this must be weighed against OS390 overhead (which steals CPU clicks from all tasks including DB2) and the suspended tasks waiting on those pages during the I/O. The longer the I/O takes to complete the longer the wait. Improved I/O subsystems do this faster and return EOC faster too. But it isn't necessarily true that upping VDWQT or DWQT will increase changed pages per dataset. There's some point, given datasets assigned remain constant, where increasing bufferpool size doesn't improve hit [...]

Wayne, We market a package to the electical distribution industry and for competitve purposes we need to offer a relational database option. We are also porting to SQLServer on NT, and may look at the new database offering from Oracle, when we accomplish the above. When DataJoiner refers to DATABASE 2 Administration Guide or any other DATABASE 2 books it is talking about the DB2 version 2 books, since DataJoiner is built off of DB2 version 2. Can you order them from IBM or somewhere? I don't know. We still have our copies from when our shop ran DB2 version 2 so I use them when needed. You can probably get away with using the version 5 or version 6 manuals since a lot of the basic commands and information didn't change much. [...]

At the bottom of the DSNTIJUZ job that is distributed with DB2 there is a little piece of smp/e code that reads in jcl for a "JCLIN". This updates the smp/e zone to track changes for the modules in that jcl and re-assemble, re-link when maintenance is applied. Personally, I do not use this part, but it looks like you have an old one in your smp zone. I think if you run the little smp step that came with v5 job dsntijuz, your smp will be updated to point to sdsnexit. Note that you then will have to [...]

Allow for 10 log pages to be used for a 32K log record... It is feasible that the header information and the first portion of the data is in the middle or toward the end of the first log page, 8 more full pages, and the last of the data spanning onto the 10th page. Taking into account an Update Not In Place with the row moving to a different page, you can potentially have 20 log pages... 10 for the original record being changed into a pointer and 10 more for the insert into the new location. Currently we use non-version specific data set high level qualifiers for our DB2 code. We are thinking of moving to using the standard IBM data set names which contain a version specific HLQ. Because we do not change the HLQ between versions we do not currently have to alter the link-edit SYSLIB concatenation in our compile PROCs. I wondered how the change of HLQ was handled in other shops that do use the standard IBM names (hopefully without changing hard coded values for SDSNLOAD in every compile PROC when we upgrade). [...]

Using DSN1LOGP, print log records for your range (STARTRBA(xxxx) ENDRBA(xxxx)) and tablespace in question (DBID(hex dbid) OBID(hex psid of space)). The DELETE records will be associated with a URID: here 0003F34E8E2A URID(0003F34BDAE8) DBID(012B) OBID(0029)
You then use DSN1LOGP to print the BEGIN UR record associated with the URID above. The BEGIN UR has the AUTHID, PLAN NAME, Correlation ID (i.e. jobname, tsoid) and other information associated with the related DM records in that unit of recovery. You can see this information in the eyecatcher portion of the BEGIN UR DSN1LOGP print and/or map the record using DSNMACS(DSNDQJ00). [...]

But if you have BMC RECOVER PLUS for DB2*, you can use the BACKOUT feature to undo all updates since the target point in time. You can't back through LOAD or REORG events and you might not be able to back through a segmented mass delete (if the data pages were re-used and DCC was not on). [...]

I have noticed too many of those syntax bugs in DB2 using nested table expressions. Many we have reported to IBM.
In your case it is a definite bug. But if you include a column function for the outer table expression then things would work. Below is example -

First we found that the large datasets wouldn't go to ML1 because they were too big, so we changed to go to ML2 directly. We then found that the recalls were serialised by HSM and when we had a lot of activity (which was quite often because we were short of DASD) the DB2 wait for recall timed out. We then increased the ZPARM to wait up to 5 mins for recalls and found that some queries could run [...]

this has been discussed in the last days of December '99, look for subject "Re: Reorg DB2 catalog/MODIFY running time".
One solution would be to modify entries off one day (or a few days) at a time. This will not reduce the total CPU time, but will allow you to spread it out over a period of weeks, and it also won't block SYSCOPY for hours at a time. Of course this will mean hundreds of thousands or millions of MODIFY steps, but it's easy to write a REXX or SAS job to generate your JCL. [...]

First, if you buy DataJoiner you get it for both NT and AIX, it's up to you where you want to run it. Now, DataJoiner is a DB2 system of it's own, so what you do after you have installed DataJoiner and set up all the communication stuff, is to create a database in the DataJoiner DB2 system. In this database you can create either normal tables, like in any other DB2database, or you can create nicknames to tables residing in another database and/or platform, like for instance Oracle or Sybase. To a user, application or another DB2 system, [...]

Since we have multiple sub-systems across multiple LPARs we use a form of dsnload like DB2.DB2x.DSNLOAD where DB2x is the ssid of that sub-system. In our compile procedures we use the DB2.DB2x.DSNLOAD associated with the LAST sub-system that we will upgrade or apply maintenance. In our case this is the "most important" production environment. Since DB2 has consistently supported backward compatibility, programs compiled with this level of DB2 run fine in all newer levels. This also prevents the use of "new" features until they are supported across the enterprise as we run the program pre-compilers at that level as [...]

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question earlier. I do agree that 99.9% of the time to tinker with the recovery information outside the scope of DB2 can be problematic, if not damn right dangerous.
When the decision was made to perform the procedure described in earlier posts, it was based on the assumption that there would never be a need to recover to a point prior to a recent image copy, say 1 week previous from the current day. Rows were deleted from syscopy before this point in time (i.e. before 1 week [...]

Assuming you stuck with the default pathnames provided in the SMP/E sample jobs for JDBC, the JDBC driver is in Unix System Services in: /usr/lpp/db2/db2510/classes/db2jdbcclasses.zip
If you're having trouble accessing the driver, you may not have all of your environmental variables setup correctly and/or your DSNAOCLI initialization file. If you look at the file /usr/lpp/db2/db2510/README, there is an explanation of all the things you need to setup for the JDBC environment. If you haven't yet done so, you should download PTF UQ41618 (APAR PQ19814) to upgrade to the sqlj/jdbc type 2 driver. This is a complete replacement of the [...]

Each MOD entry in the SMP/E target zone specifies its LMOD name. The LMOD entry in the target zone specifies its SYSLIB DDNAME. The LMOD is link edited into the SYSLIB DDNAME.
For example, in DB2 for OS/390, MOD DSNKUNR2 is in LMOD DSNK2DM whose SYSLIB is SDSNLOAD.
Make sure the LMOD SYSLIB entry(s) is SDSNEXIT & not DSNEXIT (SDSNLOAD not DSNLOAD, etc...) for the MOD(s) the PTF is installing. If the error message does not specify the LMOD that wants to use DSNEXIT, then you're going to have to check all the LMODs affected by the PTF. [...]

If the tables in the tablespace don't all have the same owner you can get into situations where one user will do a load resume log no of their table (DB2 allows this since they are the owner of the table) and leaves the tablespace in COPYPEND, causing havoc for the other tables in that tablespace. this has been discussed in the last days of December '99, look for subject "Re: Reorg DB2 catalog/MODIFY running time".

Yes you will miss additional cleanup done by MODIFY. It also cleans up SYSLGRNX. Simply deleting SYSCOPY rows by whatever mechanism does *NOT* equate to MODIFY utility.
As I have posted before, adding new indexes to SYSCOPY does *NOTHING* to improve performance. The code uses an internal protocol which uses only the index it is told to use. Sorry. [...]

First, an internal SQL-like protocol is used which is not optimal for the scan/locate/delete processing of modify. It is interesting that the DROP TABLESPACE equivalent code does *NOT* use this interface.
Second, locking was changed in Version 4 to improve concurrency on SYSCOPY and we paid a TERRIBLE price in performance. And to make matters worse, these two problems combine with even worse consequences. [...]

If you believe that any part of DB2 is not performing as you believe it should, call the support center. If everyone that posts a note to this newsgroup agreeing with a common complaint, and no one reports the problem to IBM, the problem will never get fixed. IBM is not like Microsoft. we had a similar problem with a DB2 V6 PTF that needs DSNZPxxx and DSNHDECP, the two member that normaly resides in the SDSNEXIT library. The problem seems, that during installtion/migration DSNTIJUZ uses the suffix you speficy on panel DSNTIPA1 for your SDSNEXIT as the DD name in the actual SMP/E apply. For example one of our SDSNEXIT DSN is called DSN610.SDSNEXIT.C11 (C11 is the subsystem identifier). So SMP/E uses C11 as the DDNAME for the SMP/E APPLY! Maybe you misspelled SDSNEXIT in DSNTIPA1. Here is one scenario about the "left behind" SYSLGRNX records:
1. Create a Tablespace and a Table in it. 2. Do some Inserts, Updates etc. 3. REPORT RECOVERY showed no rows in SYSCOPY and some rows in SYSLGRNX. 4. Drop the Tablespace. 5. A DSN1PRNT (FORMAT) of the SYSLGRNX shows me the entries are still there as RECORDs, not HOLEs. [...]

At the very least, you would have to create the tablespace with the same DBID, PSID, and OBID of the original. Not easy to do. Even then I would not be at all surprised if it did not do what you want.

The exists uses in-memory 4k wrap around table. This means that if you have duplicate results sets that could stay in that 4K in-memory than EXIST avoids getpages and thereby improves performance. On the other hand if you have a unique index on the correlated column then in-memory table has no use and probably DB2 will not even use it. The exist has no advantage in those situations. Also if in those situations (unique index available on the correlated column for the inner table) DB2 would even force your EXIST to convert to a JOIN internally. [...]

Using an arithmetic function in your sub-select will result in tablespace (or index) scans each time that sub-select is utilized. Specifically, your select should be SELECT A.EMPLR_ID + 1; otherwise, you'll get the id that EXISTS on your table - not the one that's missing.
