I agree with Kirk's comments. I can't remember seeing any learned papers on the subject, but here's a quick comparison from memory;

No Of SP Address Spaces ----------------------------- WLM can spawn multiple stored procedure address spaces, providing good scalability and allowing you to allocate suitable priorities to differing SP workloads. With DB2 managed SPs, only a single SP address space can be used, which obviously imposes some scalability and workload prioritisation limitations . What I've done is this -

The major difference is that starting and stopping the address spaces is not fully automatic, so you have to do some of your own automation at DB2 startup/shutdown.

P97G is the current code base, P97G was released back in May of 1999, so it has been out over a year now. A count of applied log records would not be verification even if you knew in advance how many changes occurred because DB2 may cut several types of records for any one change. See DB2/OS390 V5 Admin Guide, bookmanager ref 6.3.1.1.1: "If the work must be recovered, DB2 scans the log forward and applies the redo portions of log records and the redo portions of compensation records, without keeping track of whether the unit of recovery was committed or rolled back. We've recently (and reluctantly, from my point-of-view) become a CA/Platinum DB2 Admin tools shop, and I am currently very hard at work converting over from our beloved BMC Admin tools to the new CA/Platinum tools.

When the negotiations to replace our BMC Admin tools began, we were dealing with Platinum (this was before the buyout by CA), and they told us at the time that they would give us all the assistance we would need to make the transition from BMC to Platinum as smooth as possible. However, now that Platinum no longer exists, and we are now [...] 2962 82 37_Re: DB2 V5 & CA/Platinum Recover bug.15_Murley, Michael22_Michael_Murley@BMC.COM31_Thu, 22 Jun 2000 12:51:37 -0500576_iso-8859-1 We also found this symptom with BMC RECOVER PLUS for DB2* earlier this year.

The change in DB2's behavior was introduced with APAR PQ33002/ PTF UQ39685 (V5), UQ39686 (V6) and makes DB2 sensitive to a field in the header page (HPGHPREF at offset 0x10) that records the high formatted page number in the space. DB2 now makes sure that field is consistent with the VSAM High-used RBA of the space. The fix for RECOVER PLUS for DB2* is on the RECOVER PLUS support area of our website (http://www.bmc.com/support.html), Tech Bulletin 161081, dated March 31. I left you a voice mail message to talk about this in more detail. I think you can get around your problem by applying CA/Platinum upgrade P97G1. We are running P97G1 and DB2 V5 Putlevel 0003 with "minimal" problems. The message about the change not propagating down to the table is indeed just a Platinum warning. I think this is because RC/Migrator has seen that you want to change the index for the primary key but haven't changed the primary key definition on the table. It's just a warning in case you need to change the primary key to match whatever you've changed in the index for it. In your case, you've only changed the clustering; the keys in the PK remain unchanged. So, ignore it. You have received a lot of good information, except that I note one minor flaw, and that is you need to be getting evaluations of the absolute current editions of all those products, and look into the ones that are growing in scope, and not just hanging on. From that perspective make sure you get evaluations of the new DB2PM, especially with the Windows GUI front end, and the new capabilities. We are facing a problem in IRLM in DB2 v5 (S/390 v 2.7).

Yesterday one of our 42 DB2 (non-datasharing) experimented an ABENDS0C1 in IRLM. We find a PTF (UQ38364) which might resolve the problem in XCF, even if this DB2 is NOT a member of DS group.

Is that support available yet? I know the news at IDUG was "very soon".

From my experience, Stretch Time is VERY closely synonymous with CPU wait. Period. Stretch time is a calculated field (i.e. not truly observable by Strobe) that has to be calculated since it guesstimates how much CPU wait has occurred for the Strobe monitoring TCB itself (which needs access to a CP to see what your application TCB is doing). Possible solutions till V5: 1. Compress the TS (if not compressed). 2. Use pctfree 0 freepage 0. 3. Change partitioning index to split the data into more partitions. For items 1 and/or 2 you need to reorg after the change. For 3 you need to unload, redefine (drop/create) and load the whole TS. 1) If you have only a few ":this_will_change" tables, just code one SQL statement for each, and execute only the desired one; brutish but simple.

2) If the requirement is more complex, you may need to use dynamic SQL, which allows you to build the SQL statement in program code as a string variable before issuing it to DB2. This is more complex than static, and offers performance "challenges", but there are some examples in the manuals to get you started. Why have you coded this as a join with an on clause instead of the old and tried way of using the where clause with the join.

Both tables are match col 0, I would suspect the second table should be match col 1 on the ttl_title_no.

Hi.

Can anyone tell me the benefits and drawbacks for using locksize row and locksize page. And can you tell me which method is preferred on OS390

I've heard that making a tablespace locksize row in a sysplex environment has a high of overhead.

Much Appreciated Mohamedb@absa.co.za

Locksize row deffinately has additional overhead in a sysplex environment. With sysplex, locks on objects that have at least 1 member with update intent and 1 member with read intent are propogated to the coupling facility. Hence you have your normal lock in the member and a lock in the coupling facility. When you use row level locking both a page P-lock and a row L-lock must be taken to track which member owns the page and which members have row locks. These P-locks do not exist in a non data sharing environment. Hence, you nearly double the locking [...] 20900 44 43_Re: Row level Locking Vs Page Level Locking13_Shapiro, Dave26_Shapiro.Dave@PRINCIPAL.COM31_Tue, 27 Jun 2000 16:19:46 -0500476_iso-8859-1 Mohamed,

It is unclear in the doc how it works in a data sharing environment. There are warnings about overhead. Our experience has been that processes running on one subsystem within a group can make use of row level locking, but if there is group interest, the group bufferpool operates at the page level, negating the benefits of row level locking. If our perception regarding this is incorrect, I'd appreciate if someone could enlighten us as well. The list of new V6 keywords that I supplied in the email you responded to was derived by comparing the SQL reserved word list in Appendix E of SQL reference manuals from V5 and V6 (OS/390) Sorry for not specifying. I'm afraid I can't speak to NT questions.

We haven't migrated to V6 yet so I don't know if this will be a problem or not. Its the reason I posted the question. KEYCARD really has nothing to with the individual values ( Chicago, IL being more frequent than Chicago, FL.) But, rather with the number of values. For example, in an "ADDRESS table" with key columns STATE,CITY and ZIPCODE, if stats show 10000 rows with column cardinality showing 100 states and 100 cities, then there might appear to be 10000 city/state combinations. (an average of 1 address per city/state combination?) KEYCARD can gather the correct cardinality for the number of city/state combinations, and if they are skewed, then this can help the optimizer more accurately determine the access [...] 21261 36 19_DB2 V6-RML-0003????16_Charles Valentin15_VALENCH@AOL.COM29_Tue, 27 Jun 2000 20:42:07 EDT559_US-ASCII We've updraded to DB2 V6 RML-0003 (3) wks ago & have encountered several problems which make me uneasy about going Production with this maintenance. I think you may be confusing an ABEND with a non-zero RETURN CODE.

What is probably happening is that LE intercepts the data exception abend, produces some pretty output and then, as Greg said, terminates normally - albeit with a non-normal return code.

If you want LE to percolate the abend, so that DB2 sees it, you can use the LE runtime option TERMTHDACT with one of the UAxxxx values (See LE Prog Ref for the actual values you can specify). Check APAR PQ36206 to allow you to disable STAR JOIN. We found that, after a rebind, star join was being used and perf was degraded. This fix allowed us to go back to our original access paths.

Also, if you use OAM be aware that depending on your level of maintenance DSNCLI may not be shipped in SDSNLOAD. DSNCLI is shipped in SDFHLOAD for CICS V4.1 and (should be - see PQ26732) TS 1.3. This is highly object oriented, but we're using DB2 V5 and DB2 UDB for NT as storage environments. Rose includes a change control tool, ClearCase, and the administrator wants to have "everything" that is subject to change or connected to a change, stored in this ClearCase environment. Does anyone have experience in this or in any other change control tool using DB2 objects? If so, how granular did you get in defining change objects? It is possible that the 5 largest contiguous free spaces on P390DX (the volume to which archive logs are allocated?) are not enough to allocate the archive log primary space. Try a defrag to accumulate all the free space into one area.
