you DO mean DB2 - the little one. UDB V7 (UNO) supports generated columns, and they can be generated from a substring (or any other scalar function, among many other things). However, you do end up with the additional column in the table, so you don't save any space, just application logic since DB2 maintains the column for you. Thanks for your responses - the problem turned out to be that one of our previous MVS systems programmers put the DB2 Call Attach Facility in the LINKLIST so that ENDEVOR would not need STEPLIB.

Once we added a Version 6 STEPLIB all was OK.

Thanks again.

When you compiled and linkedit your stored procedure do you include DSNALI in your link edit? Thats the include for DB2 established Stored procedure.

If you used DSNRLI, thats the include for WLM stored procedures.

We are also running Websphere on AIX, and we are using archival logging. All you need to do to enable archive logging is to set the "logretain" database configuration parameter to "1" for "recovery logging". It's probably a good idea to also archive the log files once you enable recovery logging, otherwise your log files may take over your system. To do this, you will need to modify and compile the "db2uext2" exit, and enable it via the "userexit" database configuation parameter. There are a couple of sample "db2uext2" exits shipped with the product, you should be able to [...] 3162 67 21_Re: archive log error12_Vernon, John27_John.Vernon@TRS.STATE.TX.US30_Tue, 1 Aug 2000 12:05:24 -0500391_iso-8859-1 Thanks for all the help with the archive log problem, it turned out that we needed to allocate additional volumes to the stogroup (3390 NOT 3380!)....what a great help this list is!

If a few more of you whiners would get in the game here with me and get a little bloody, there would be an end to the "concerns about the stability of V6". I'm pretty sure you lack the needed prereqs to go to V6 at your current V5 level. You would also gain the functionality you mentioned within V5. As far as going to V6 versus waiting for V7... we are currently trying to make that decision. My thoughts are that V6 is stable enough but question whether or not there is a need for the new functionality within the next year or so. Search the DB2-L archives for "invalid select". There was a discussion about this last year which basically points to the "Considerations for Rebinding Certain Plans and Packages in Chapter 5.3 in the DB2 for OS/390 Administration.

I am sure that BMC is taking the safe option by going back to an image copy that contains the compression dictionary. There appears to be several situations that might cause a rebuild of compression dictionary that are not recorded in the DB2 catalog. Once we added a Version 6 STEPLIB all was OK.

I assume that you meant to say that this was a partitioned space rather than a segmented one, since the whole exercise was aimed at repartitioning.

In order to do anything with the log records between the most recent image copy and the drop/create, you probably would first need to re-create the space using the old limit key definition. If you can't come up with that definition easily, BMC Log Master could get it from the log records created during the drop. Glynne, You can use bi-directional heterogeneous replication. You would need:

Workstation (Unix or NT) SQL Server Client DataJoiner DB2 UDB DataPropagator-Relational (DPropR) DB2 Connect

Host (OS/390) DPropR Capture DPropR Apply

The IBM courses which describe how to do this are DW140 and DW150 for replication and CF601 for host connectivity. You can go to our website at http://www.thefillmoregroup.com. There is a non unicode approach ...

What we've done is to use normal CHAR datatypes and store different codepages in the them depending on the country. This scheme works - because a column indicating the country is part of the key of every table and the users only look at data belonging to their country. Our database currently supports 41 countries and contains customer name and address information for which it is important to get the national characters correct. 1. Going with your idea of adding the userid/group id to the base table, I would support the earlier view of not including it in the primary key. In the SYSPACKSTMT table, all host variables are denoted by ': H'. You will see the same thing if you see inside a DBRM.

When you are comparing the cpu utilization for inserts, I suspect that you are not comparing with inserts by other programs into the SAME table. The CPU utilization will depend on a number of factors. Check the number of indexes on the table. Also check if RI is defined and, if so, how many foreign keys are defined on the table. DB2 is smart enough to know that the column was the same value and didn't really need to be updated, so therefore, no logging. Capture only captures what is logged.

Net.data basically allows you to issue SQL from html (via macros). To incorporate program logic into a net.data implementation, typically the SQL issued would be a stored procedure call. This model works very well.

Accessing DB2 data via Java involves the webserver initiating the program logic (Java) at an application type server (i.e. Websphere) which then uses a connectivity product (i.e. DB2 Connect) to access the DB2 data. This model works well too. Has anyone out there used a COBOL (or PL1) program to INSERT LOB data greater than 16 MB?

As far as I can see, the rules are as follows:

- with fields up to 32KB, the LOAD utility can be used - I have successfully used this.

- with fields up to 16MB, a program has to be used. Both COBOL and PLI have a limitation that any individual working storage field may not exceed 32KB. We had this problem using Powerbuilder. I believe it's a bug in the DB2 client code.

The looping you describe is caused by PBs default use of the SQL_DRIVER_COMPLETE option in the fDriverCompletion argument of the SQLDriverConnect ODBC function call. If you change it to SQL_DRIVER_NOPROMPT, you'll get the appropriate "expired password" error message returned to the client. [...] 22836 23 46_Managing DB2 objects via ChangeMan from Serena13_Tim K. But I/O can be scheduled even prior to reaching WRTHRSH in case the log encounters a commit by some UOW . So, in a transaction oriented environment, with default value of WRTHRSH, I think commits and not WRTHRSH would be the triggering factor for output buffers to be written to active log. When we get down to measuring performance, the maximum I've seen is around one tenth of a second. Where the TSO modules are heavily used, they are generally moved to LPA, so there is one set of modules for all of the users. That will reduce the times too. A lot of things can slow down your INSERT performance. First of all, you can compare INSERTs to the same table to get similar performance characteristics, but INSERTs within the same application to different tables will have not provide any meaningful data. There are really two types of INSERTs:

1) sequential inserts - occur when there is no free space; all inserts go at the end of the data set 2) random inserts - occur when there is free space; DB2 will attempt to preserve clustering based on key of the inserted row [...] 23169 40 23_Re-initialising DSNDB070_24_Mike_Jarrett@MANDG.CO.UK30_Mon, 7 Aug 2000 17:25:26 +0000365_us-ascii Hi List,

We have a number of whole-volume DSNDB07 datasets which, for simplicity of D.R., I would like to include in our daily backups, along with everything else. I have two questions regarding data replication in a OS\390 DB2 V6 environment.

(1) Our current replication implementation uses BMC's Unload+\Load+ as the solution. To ensure consistency, we execute the unload utility in sharelevel reference. Because of this, one of our major databases is off-line for approximately 30 minutes each day. The data need only be unloaded once a day and there is no requirement for immediate replication. We were going to use one the replication tools (IBM Data Propagator, BMC ChangeDataMove) for this effort but an alternative was raised to use EMC hardware replication. This should work fine. You could use char, long varchar whatever and indexes could be used subject to normal db2 limitations. You can store anything in the column - its irrelevant to db2 that it's unicode if you're just passing it back to the client for input/output. There's no reason why you can't do business rule processing on the mainframe as well. Of course if you need to process the contents of the field rather than just move it about then you will need some unicode intelligence in the mainframe software - but that shouldn't be a big deal. Then you can set up a separate plan with this this qualifier and a collection with the same. The owner can be the same. However, you cannot achieve the data independence you are talking about without physically isolating data or controlling acces through a program. Which means, using the synonyms will only be deceiving the user into thinking he is using a different database, but the underlying database (and the data) will be the same.
