I agree with you: our B&B Mainview for DB2 ALWAYS signals an HP hit ratio of 100% (more or less) but I don't believe it (too high.....) I prefere (as you) to consider HP efficiency to evaluate I/O savings.
Of course the main target is to save I/Os AND you MUST consider overall I/O, but if I have a 'rule-of-thumb' to use the work is easier. Don't be reluctant to express some numbers here, we all know that these numbers sometimes cannot be used in some installations BUT they come from your [...]

No offence to Polly, but I am glad someone DID hit this problem.
When this restriction was originally announced by IBM, I asked a number of IBM-ers about the implications for existing DBRMs. Consensus at the time was that BINDs (and PRECOMPILEs) would fail, but REBINDs would be OK.
Now it seems that the missing colon will continue to haunt us for some time, particularly since auto-rebinds will also fail!! [...]

There are two distinct reasons for using this keyword. One is in a data sharing environment when access to partitions is separated by member. If members access specific parts and no other members access the same parts LOCKPART(YES) can reduce inter-system interest and help with performance. The second reason deals with lock escalation. If your application escalates with LOCKPART(YES), the parent lock that is escalated is on the partition and not the entire tablespace. If you don't use [...]

What are you using for connectivity? DB2 Connect? V6.1? Enteprise Edition?
If you are using DB2 Connect, tcpip, and not using sysplex mode, you can specify a particular host address to direct the work (even though the 'location' name is the same).
Now, you'd have to kick everyone off (db2stop force, db2start) in order to switch to a different host address (i.e. your other mvs system). That is unless you had two servers assigned to one name in a dynamic DNS, and used DNS to add/remove a host address. [...]

I am wondering if UDF or Stored Procedures should be used in the following situation:
Select f1(p1,p2,...) from table1 where ....
The above query would be equivalent to
Select p1, p2, ... from table1 where .... (but result is directed to a file)
We would like the result to go to a file (of course, it has to be allocated previously) instead of to screen. [...]

You could implement IBM's TXSeries on your LAN and use a CICS distributed program link from MVS to TXSeries (and vice-versa). The linked to program could do the database access for you. Or, you could use an LU6.2 application to connect between TXSeries and MVS/CICS. This would enable you to control your unit of work more closely, to implement 2 phase commit for your database updates (I'm not sure if TXSeries has 2 phase commit to MS SQL Server). [...]

It turned out that due to limitations with some in-house written software, we had SWA defined below the line (IBM recommends SWA be defined above the line for DB2), which was causing 878 abends ultimately leading to E50013 abends. As we could change to SWA above the line, we had to resort to cycling the software a couple times a week which eliminated the E50013 abends. [...]

The only indexable predicate in the query is CO_ID = ?, which is the leading column of the index, but with a firstkeycard = 1, means that the column does absolutely zero filtering.
The predicates enclosed within parentheses are not indexable but stage 1. Therefore every row must be returned to stage 1 to evaluate these predicates. Since you are obviously selecting non-indexed columns then the most efficient method to access all data is via a tablespace scan. [...]

Is List Prefetch chosen in the production plan table for this query?
If so, then it is a runtime decision to revert to non-list prefetch. However, if you reach any of the RID pool thresholds I would expect to see an excess of async I/O and not sync.

The sectnoi and stmtnoi simply take care of the situation where stmt #s are too big for a smallint (32767). I assume they would always be populated by a BIND. Just like CARD v/s CARDF in V5 runstats. I will try it.
My question dealt with the queryno (assigned by user) v/s the physical statement no. Here is the response from IBM - what this means is that if we manually assign a queryno, any attempt to obtain the associated text wll fail. I am NOT happy about that but looks like we will need to wait till V7. [...]

V6 also introduced a new keyword "QUERYNO" to DML - INSERT, UPDATE,DELETE and SELECT. One is expected to use them in order to maintain consistent STMTNO across pre-compiles.
Given that the "QUERYNO" keyword is used, the PLAN_TABLE can be consistently joined with the SYSPACKSTMT using QUERYNO column of the plan_table and STMTNO column of the syspackstmt. [...]

We have been running v6 in our test and production environments since April/May 2000, and have done many, many binds in the meantime, but the STMTNOI and SECTNOI columns have not been populated. That is why I suspect that either they have been added to the catalog but are not actually used (yet) by v6, or we have a problem in our environments. I'd be curious to see your results. [...]

The error your receiving is being caused by the CREATE TABLE statement. Sean's example was missing a semicolon. Try this;

Currently we are rolling out v6 of DB2 onto OS2 platform. Is anyone considering using DB2 V7 SPB for SQL stored procedures which in turn produces C source files representing the stored procedures. Having produced the source file this way we would then precompile, compile and bind to a DB2 v6 database. Of course I'm not aware of design decisions but the following aspects spring to mind.
Maybe it was thought that LOB's would be primarily used for binary data. Sort of like a data archive for large amounts of data that are cumbersome to store on client platforms. Since this kind of data does not compress very well in the first place, it would only be overhead to do compression on this data. Specifically for CLOB's... Using compression would seriously affect the performance of things like substr and other functions that can defer materialization of the CLOB. [...]

If this DB2 subsystem services requesters that support extended dynamic SQL, such as SQL/DS, set the DESCSTAT subsystem parameter to YES in the DSNTIJUZ installation job. This allows applications from the requesting system to execute SQL DESCRIBE statements that appear as extended dynamic SQL statements in the requesting system, but appear as static SQL in the DB2 package. You can bind the OS/390 packages into AIX through the DB2I Bind Package Panel. You just need to supply the location name, which would be the location name in SYSIBM.LOCATIONS that corresponds to your UDB database.

The way to bind is to submit the bind on os/390, after changing the bind cards to include the nt location as the high-order part of the collection name. ie: ntlocation.collid The security at the nt side will be in effect for allowing the bind operation. We are using STORED PROCEDURES extensively but in WLM environment only. We adopted a procedure to direct our debug statements controlled by RUNOPTS parameter while registering the stored procedure, to WLM SYSPRINT DD, thereby providing a way for developers to see what's going while executing the procedure. In case of SQL ERRORS we call DSNTIAR with related SQLCA format and dump the error report to the same WLM SYSPRINT DD. May be you can do the same by formatting and sending the detailed error report back to VB client instead sending just possibly hard to understand SQLCODE(s) [...]

I may put a few really small tables, or tables that don't get accessed all that frequently into the same space. One of the main reasons is because I like to use load to load data into my tables. I suspect that the reason for not having compression on LOBs is related to the management of the compression process. If you try to work through how compression would have to work, for example - to extract a byte all previous bytes need to be uncompressed - to change a byte all following bytes need to be uncompressed then recompressed, and the IO load this would have, I can understand why it wasn't implemented. I don't think on NT you want to create 2000 tablespaces!

I don't know that any tool will help you with PCTFREE and FREEPAGE settings. The decision must be based on the update / access profile of the tablespace, so is dependent on the applications referencing it. If for example, you have a high insert rate and little opportunity to reorg the tablespace, you might want to have a high PCTFREE (or low FREEPAGE) value, however the trade-off is less rows per page therefore less rows will be read per I/O. In between I get a couple of other trips, so expect my appends to be infrequent.
Please read the Installation Guide section on incompatibilities once more and those two pages in the V6 Technical Update. Be sure that you read from the latest book downloaded from the web.
