The application design is such that it should be impossible to not have valid values.

I have seen something similar to this in the past, but then a row not found condition was displayed in spufi. But in the application the developer got the -305 when they did a FETCH INTO the variable from the function, the function returns a null if the row was not found, hence the -305. If you have a product like file-aid for DB2 you should be able to test this, since you can execute the same statement as in your program that includes the FETCH INTO. a) Take DASD copies of the entire DB2 subsystem and all the database;

b) Use IBM-DB2 copy utility and recover catalog and all the databases at the new site.

What's the advantages of each solution ?

Each db2 instance is a separate database manager and each needs to be started in order to access it.

The db2start command starts the INSTANCE named in the DB2INSTANCE environment variable.

You therefore need to issue something like

C:\>set db2instance=inst1

C:\>db2start

Then you will be able to attach to the instance. Note that the DB2INSTANCE environment variable is used generally to direct commands to an instance. Has anyone had a problem similar to this? We have the starjoin feature disabled.

Thanks for any information you may have on this.

I have been going back through postings and found this from Sept. 2000.

My question is How do I determine the licensee count for web based users accessing DB2 using EE?

From the earlier postings (list below), the connection is based on an application starting and ending.

In the web application situation when does the "application start and end". Here are some thoughts/questions ... but if you have a definitive answer, that would be great. You can't manually start them. WLM will start them as and when they are needed. BTW, you get one started task per WLM service class that requires the environment - so you can get several active with the same name.

WLM is also likely to get petulant if there are too many abends too quickly, and not start them. In this case you have to use "V WLM,APPLENV=...,REFRESH", sometimes "V WLM,APPLENV=...,RESUME", and sometimes we've even had to QUIESCE and then RESUME, to get them going. But even this doesn't actually _start_ one - it just _enables_ one to start [...] 3106 55 59_Re: CICS programs - losing addressability to host variables8_Rob Lake20_robert.lake@CONTI.DE31_Tue, 24 Oct 2000 07:00:24 -0500398_- Hi,

There is no distinction on the page between the existing rows and newly loaded rows.

An additional caveat to consider is the existence of duplicate rows in the LOAD process. During the initial LOAD, all input data is formatted and put into the table. However, when the INDEXES are updated, UNIQUE constraints are enforced and DB2 will log standard DELETE DM records for the duplicate rows, even if LOG NO was specified. I would like some input regarding using RRS in conjunction with stored procedures to manage a unit of work within a stored procedure.

In this particular case, I would like to us RRS to commit or roll back a unit of work which consists of DB2 and non-DB2 data. All the data would exist within MVS though. Did the tablespace actually stop? The way I interpret your message is that the unavailable resource messages occurred on the stop (I can't imagine how they could occur on the following start) - in which case the ts might not have stopped. So the alter ts hasn't taken effect. I am doing a display to confirm that the object has not moved to the new bufferpool. As far as I'm concerned, DASD copies of the entire DB2 subsystem might lack a consistency point. You might need to stop all applications before doing the copies and probably - depending on your batch window - it will take too long to perform the whole copy. The advantage is that you have an easy restore procedure for both DB2 subsystem and data. By using the DB2 COPY utility, you can make the copies whenever you want (maybe in different times for different systems) and store them into tapes. In addition, if you take copies of your archive log [...] 8396 162 24_Re: STAND BY REPLICATION19_Margaritis Dimitris20_margardi@NOVABANK.GR31_Wed, 25 Oct 2000 13:36:42 +0300639_iso-8859-7 Thank you very much My application is a web banking application I am not going to use Update Anywhere scenario's I 'm a bit worried because the DB2 Replication Guide refer the following

I think it's called UNIcode because it is a UNIversal coding scheme. (If the name was based on the number of bytes per character, I suppose they would have called it DUOcode.)

It turns out that there are two Unicode encoding schemes: UTF-16, which always uses 16 bits; and UFT-8, which uses 8 bits for the standard ASCII character set and 16 bits for other characters. I can't see how setting up the DB2s on two different networks will stop replication being affected by network traffic (but I'm not a Network guru...) as they still have to pass data between them, and I would imagine that you would then be passing the same volume of data across *two* networks instead of just one. 1) What does the size of the dictionary - before reaching the max. - depend on? The number of rows in the compressed table? I'm assuming so. Try the data joiner tool; I think it may generate what you need to do your thousand tables. DB2 replication is not synchronous so anything that is missed within a particular apply cycle will not get to the target db i.e. you have an apply cycle of 1 minute and you do 50 seconds of transactions on the source server before it goes down and you will lose those 50 seconds of transactions on the target. For true 100% standby you'd need to be doing two phase commit i.e. committing each transaction [...] 12287 82 42_Re: Compression dictionary quick questions14_James Campbell29_James.Campbell@HANCORP.COM.AU31_Thu, 26 Oct 2000 16:19:21 +1100557_iso-8859-1 Raymond

1) Depends on when the dictionary is built: - REORG - the entire contents of the tablespace is used during the unload phase. As it knows the dictionary before it starts the reload, it only uses as much space as it really needs during the load. - LOAD - the little I've seen is that DB2 uses the rows it's loading until it decides that the compression dictionary is about as efficent as it's going to get. It then stores the dictionary into the tablespace (it left 64K at the start before it started loading) and then uses the [...] 12370 167 59_Re: Issues (especially sizing) of using Unicode Code page s14_James Campbell29_James.Campbell@HANCORP.COM.AU31_Thu, 26 Oct 2000 16:29:30 +1100617_iso-8859-1 Some things I think are true:

Unicode does not imply a sort order. That is U+0042 (LATIN CAPITAL LETTER B) might collate after characters with a "higher" Unicode value (for example, possibly, U+00C0 LATIN CAPITAL LETTER A WITH GRAVE). (U+0000 to U+007F correspond to the ascii characters x'00' to x'7f'.)

UTF-16 does not impose a storage order. Our U+0042 might be stored as x'0042' or x'4200'. If there might be confusion, one is supposed to store U+FEFF (ZERO WIDTH NO-BREAK SPACE aka BYTE ORDER MARK) as the first character. As U+FFFE is not used, the existance of x'feff' or x'fffe' [...] 12538 120 42_Re: Compression dictionary quick questions15_Bell, Raymond W31_Raymond.W.Bell@TEAM.TELSTRA.COM31_Thu, 26 Oct 2000 16:43:30 +1100522_iso-8859-1 James,

Appreciate the comments, but it's not quite what I'm looking for. I believe you've effectively answered 1/2 of my first question i.e. if you build the dictionary using Load then it's 64K. What if you use Reorg? Someone else (sorry, bit keen on the ol' 'delete e-mail' button) I think suggested how well the data compresses and how many rows are involved determines the size of the dictionary. So, maybe you answered the first half as well - thinking as I'm writing - so full marks after all. Use DSN1PRNT to print the header page of the tablespace. HPGZNUMP (at byte offset x'37') has the number of 4k pages required.

just as an aside, LOADing data in a compressed tablespace can run you into trouble. Try this: Drop and recreate a compressed tablespace and load data using 'resume' (the tablespace is empty anyway, so why not use resume ?); I did that and got a tablespace full of uncompressed data; I wouldn't have realized hadn't the load-utility abended indicating that an attempt had been made to load a row into a partition whilst the row actually belongs to the next partition, whereas the datasets simply reached the max. dataset-size. LOAD REPLACE did the trick. Just something to watch. One remark. It seems that you missed a year, which is evenly divided by 400 is a leap year, 2000. I don't know if that is all. My Report recovery timestamp is very close (2 hours, but the right day), but BSDS-timestamp seems to be farer away.

The started task address spaces run on 'system time' which they set when the first installed the operating system in this shop to GMT. Rather a smart move, really, a bit odd to adjust for the offset in your head whenever you look at DB2, but like all things, you can get used to it. They have offset routines from GMT to get local time for update timestamps which is why we bring CICS & TMON, things like that down for the hour. Thanks for all your comments, everyone. I'm quite aware actually working out the size of the compression dictionary is, at best, interesting and, at worst, utterly pointless. So it's between 8K and 64K i.e. a sixth of a track all the way up to the dizzying hights of 1 and a third tracks. Or sod-all, in tech-speak. I was just curious as to how you would find out, and James' answer seems to do the trick - although I haven't actually tried it. The symptoms were a bunch of live CICS trans from 2 DB2-connected regions all hung on CLOTECB via CICS internal enqueue (it turned out there was an ENQUEUE lockout for SYSZDSN3 DSNYALLI which is the serially reusable resource for DB2 SSI calls). Basically 1 TCB owned the enqueue, other TCBs were waiting for the release. Cancelling any trans that were 1st in line with the CLOTECB resource ownership didn't budge a thing (BTW, these trans had to be forced out). The DSNTIJIC job covers the catalog and directory, and obviously you need to set up your own backups for the application(s) tablespaces for your system or you cannot recover the data. DB2 itself only uses GMT/ UDT time - as long as you keep GMT time constant and only vary the local time offset then DB2 and most of the other infrastructure (IMS/ MIM etc) does not need to be stop/ started/ left down for 1 hour etc. If you do, however, vary the GMT time backwards then DB2 will need to be stop/ started to prevent it from experiencing duplicate times in it's logs/ syscopy etc. [...] 17680 121 31_Re: precompile problem in v510.14_James Campbell29_James.Campbell@HANCORP.COM.AU31_Fri, 27 Oct 2000 19:01:47 +1100365_iso-8859-1 Ali

I believe it wouldn't work since ODBC is implemented as an DLL and SAS/C, as yet, cannot directly invoke a DLL. We wrote a small test program in IBM C that called ODBC. That program was invoked from SAS/C with no problem.

I would be surprised to find out that connections are dropped due to idle thread timeout while SQL was running.

I think you are correct to determine what the applications' problems are. It is entirely possible that an application could require additional time. For example, an application where customer service personnel are working off of an interactive phone conversation with a customer. An application may have started reading and/or writing, and some time may elapse before completing the transaction. In this case you would not want to arbitrarily drop the thread/connection. In general the index will be rebuilt. However if reorg require to access the index, eg you define a cluster index and SORTDATA is not specified, the reorg will fail.
