At the risk of having missed part of this thread....
I may have missed some statistics being passed on by Roland but if the conclusion that the service task wait is not due to open activity is drawn only from the stats in the attached email, then I think you are jumping to conclusions. These stats do show that there will be no closes because the system is approaching DSMAX, but it does not show at all that no opens have been performed. Now running on DB2 v6.1 and OS/390 2.8.
I would guess IBM's recommended mode of operation would be Goal. Comparing your columns in the SQL statement against the DCLGEN is not enough. The DCLGEN may or may not accurately reflect the actual table definition within DB2. Check your columns against the DB2 catalog and see if there's a mismatch.

When you do do a reorg, the extra columns will be materialised on all rows.
However, it doesn't _really_ matter if the table has excess columns - provided they don't want to reuse the column names. Yes, extra space required, performance loss, extra work to remember that this table carries the baggage of their (not your) changing requirements, generally not a good thing. No, this type of coding (I presume you are refering to the 'connect' clause) is not available on OS/390. There are a number of techniques which have been suggested in the past to provide similar functionality. Search the archives (http://jupiter.ryci.com/cgi/wa.exe?S1=db2-l) for "hierarchy"

You won't be allowed to insert a row into a table with your Not Null column unless you provide a value. I know DB2 will know where to find the PACKAGE in either case, by knowing what the CURRENT SERVER value is. What I am curious about, is whether DB2 takes any more time and CPU to determine that the PACKAGE is local and that the LOCATION of '*' means the same as a blank location. [...]

May I clarify/correct my own initial statement from the mail below:
If the index screening is occurring on the inner table of a nested loop join, and the inner table is joined many thousands or millions of times, then this could account for the significant CPU reduction. I haven't seen the message before but what I think is happening is that DB2 is trying to acquire a lock in order to perform an extent. Do you have many concurrent inserters on this particular dataset? Also, you should review your allocation parameters (PRIQTY,SECQTY).
Another take on this is to see why the request times out (in other words, another thread caused extent to take place but that extent takes so long that it causes timeout). [...]

There are two other statistics, NEARINDREF and FARINDREF that indicate when an update occurred on a variable character row and the row had to be relocated because no space was left on the page. I would think that if a row got relocated then it may not be in clustering order either. [...]

If you have a separate group of people to promote programs (i.e. do binds) then you may not want those same people to be able to access the tables referred to in the programs they're binding for. What we did at one site I was at awhile ago was to grant Select, Insert, Update and Delete on all our Production tables/views to some-meaningful-but-unused-value. We then, as Sysadms, set current SQLID to be this some-meaningful-but-unused-value and granted the binders Bindagent. This is all from memory, but granting Execute is also a one-off thing, like granting Packadm. It depends on your site standards, but given a static number of CICS and Batch plans, and a fairly static collection list, you (i.e. your Sysadms or whoever you want to do this) grant Execute on the plan(s) to whomever (eg. the CICS region names, the authid of the batch job scheduler, etc.) as well as granting execute on package all-your-collections.* to these same IDs. Using the example of a nested loop join: For each qualifying outer table row, the inner table is accessed to obtain the matching rows. Yes you are right and I also do not use the preceding declare (implying the fixes are there - I will check back later today if that is not the case).
Rob Wright also replied correctly to Ricardo whereas my first guess was more to do with a genuine Rexx/coding error (such as a rtn being called too many times or statements being built dynamically with incorrect values). Very few tables in practice operate that way.
Most of them are used, at least some of the time, for retrievals of quantities of rows in a particular sequence. If the rows in the table are physically ordered that way already, DB2 can simply prefetch the rows and your application won't be waiting for I/O. If they aren't, then to get the rows in sequence, DB2 [...]

If you have a non-segmented multi-table tablespace (definitely not following any rule of thumb here!) you can load rows in hierarchical sequence. For example an order row followed by orderitem rows where the primary key of the orderitem table is orderno||itemno. This is useful if you very frequently join the order and orderitem tables since the orderitem rows will probably be in the buffer pool when the order row is accessed, saving an IO. Note that each table still needs its own clustering index. [...]

I wanted to know if other sites have been successfully using the IBM DB2 XML Extenders. I have been evaluating them for about 3 weeks, and have found problems to the extent that we will most likely give the current version a miss.
Before dropping the DB2 XML Extenders as a product to use, I would like to contact someone who has used them so I could share some experiences. [...]

One tip: make sure you perform the JCLIN step at the end of the DSNTIUZ (zparms) job. This way if a PTF hits a zparm macro, your modules will automatically be recompiled.
Tip #2: a continuation of #1. I change the DSNTIUZ job so that each subsystem's zparm modules are recorded in the SMPE CSI as unique modules. For example: step DSNTIZA dd SYSLIN, I change the &&LOADSET member name to DB2PILMM instead of the default DSNTILMM. I do the same on the DSNTIZL SYSLIN link input cards (INCLUDE [...]

With this log analyzer will start its next run at the rba or lrsn where the previous run left off. Then you set up a scheduled to run periodically to extract data for the selected tables. Its a good idea to schedule the log analyzer jobs to run while your log data is still on dasd. [...]

Then we copy load mods, panels, etc. to subsystem-specific libraries when we roll out a new release or maintenance. I take a long time setting up the copy jobs and procedures when moving to my 'playground' subsystem. Then, after thorough testing, I've got the procedures in place to quickly and accurately migrate to each of our other 4 subsystems (doing Production last, of course). [...]

I have an LPAR with 2 TCP/IP stacks, how can I direct a specific DB2 to a specific IP stack?
The position I'm in is that the network folks want me to use the IP address to differentiate the DB2 subsystems keeping the port assignments the same. This way they can propagate identical port assignments across the LPARs for applications to use. This makes the IP address the "traffic cop" across the systems. [...]

If your IDTHTOIN is a reasonable value, then the application is having a problem. From DB2's standpoint the thread is ACTIVE but IDLE and holding locks. In the test without triggers you update all rows in the ORDER_TABLE once and then update all the rows in the MASTER_TABLE once.
The trigger you specified will fire once for each row updated in the ORDER_TABLE. As a result, the second test updates all rows in the ORDER_TABLE once and all rows in the MASTER_TABLE once for each ORDER_TABLE row. It is therefore updating the entire MASTER_TABLE many times rather than once as in the first test. [...]

If you are trying to copy a tablespace between DB2 subsystems, then DFDSS is not an appropriate mechanism. There are internal DB2 IDs embedded in the data which need to be converted to the equivalent IDs on the receiving DB2 subsystem. The DBID of the database and the PSID of the tablespace are held in the header page. The table OBID is held in the record header of each row. [...]

You can move one entire db2 subsystem, rename datasets , update changes (Zparm), create a new db2 procs and bring up a new db2 system using DFDSS but you can't use dfdss to copy datasets to different db2 systems because all these datasets has an internal information (dbd, odbid, psid) that only will be recognize by the source db2 system. If you want you move data accross you should use utilities such as UNLOAD , LOAD or DSN1COPY to carry out this activity. IF you just try to move just one of those datasets you will get a inconsistency error because [...]

Clearly the concensus is that DFDSS is not for copying files between DB2 systems due to identifier problems. I recently attended a seminar which covered different techniques for migrating DB2 and using DFDSS was given as option although there was mention of issues with internal data like ids, levelids etc but the impression was given that these could be overcome using REPAIR. Issac, The developer will try the cursor option next time he modifies the program. We are trying to avoid adding another index just for this SQL. It runs in batch, just once, every night. Michael, I am with a company, NEON Systems, which provides ODBC drivers for this purpose. Perhaps if you expand on what types of "support headaches" you have been having I can be of more assistance. Generally you are going to find that almost all middleware applications today that access OS/390 data are going to use ODBC. This is actually designed to make management and compatibility between different applications/databases easier. Our product for example, Shadow Direct, uses ODBC to access virtually any type of OS/390 data and we do this with a single ODBC driver. [...]

I strongly recommend that you install the 'official' interface. Several reasons:
1) It is an add-on (at least the V6 one is). That is extra modules only, no change to existing modules, so little/no verification testing required. 2) Freeware (in the sense that it doesn't cost any extra). 3) It is the way of the future. I doubt that any of the other freeware REXX-DB2 interfaces will be enhanced. This means that if you use another interface then, in the future, you will have either a) a not fully capable interface; b) two interfaces with confusion as to which [...]

It would be possible to use DFDSS and REPAIR as described. It would be necessary to define the tables on the target subsystem with the same OBID as the source statement. 2. Lack of contiguous space : you can make your tablespaces multi-volume so that extents can be allocated on other candidate volumes. I have come across situation whereby to get at output parameter you have to completely fetch recordset or the Recordset has been closed. The maximum size is 2Gb. Therefore everytime the limit is reached DB2 allocates a new VSAM and increments the A00n portion of the file name by 1.
I understand that with recent versions of os390/DB2 that the maximum size of the VSAM file can be increased to greater than 2 Gb. I would suggest that you partition the large tablespace just to help make things like reorg's and recovery a more managable process. [...]

Why do you think this is an error message? It looks to me like it's just the informational message telling you that dbm has started.
When you installed DB2, you had a choice of starting the database service every time you start the computer or not. Unless I'm missing something, I would guess you told DB2 to start every time your machine starts/restarts and that this message is just informing you that it has issued the start command. [...]

1.he tool allows a subset of data to be defined by :- a. allowing the user to produce a list of related tables, those relationships being hard coded into the system tables/data dictionary/catalog; or being recorderd in the tool(enabling you to enulate your program implicit relationships). b. providing selection criteria on a table by table basis c. enabling the user to control how the realtional tree is traversed, from parent to [...]

Since the DB2 Copy utility does not support copying an NPI by DSNUM, it's hard to see how DB2 would support parallelism for NPI recovery. Perhaps someone will correct me if I'm mistaken.
A non partitioned table space can go into multiple data sets if it becomes large enough (2 GB max per data set). The DB2 Copy and Recover utilities do support copying and recovering non partitioned table spaces by DSNUM, so I guess they could use parallelism in that case - if you make your image copies to DASD, of course - though I'm not certain that [...]

The best way to find out what DB2 is going to do is by performing an "EXPLAIN" on the SQL. I have found problems with both examples you have given. However, I know due to problems in PeopleSoft and SAP that IBM has been making changes in DB2 to support poor design by application packages. As a general rule when you are coding an application I highly recommend using the DCLGEN output for host variables so the data type, and length match. Apparently, there is a limit within DFSMS/dfp that says that you can't allocate a primary quantity greater than the device type that you have available. If you have a device that can only store 2.8 G then you can't allocate a primary quantity greater than 2.8 G. I agree with Rick. Even if one uses DB2 RI, the application program has to be tested for Rollback issues. An example would be if, the Order header(parent) and some detail(children) rows was externalized (written) to the DB2 table and before all detail rows where successfully written a problem occured. This would leave the Order and it's detail incomplete. As you can see the Rollback logic testing is necessary in this example. [...]

I know that I am not defining my privileges correctly, but I am stumped as to what to specify and where and when. Any help will be greatly appreciated! If you wish to [...]

This problem is on a PeopleSoft HRMS PAY CONFIRM process in version 7.0. Unfortunately, I don't know the module name or the stored SQL statement name. We've contacted PeopleSoft about the issue, but they've indicated an unwillingness to work on the problem since the release we're on is 7.0. I've reformatted the query 3 different ways, but I'm not sure if they are equivalent, and I'd appreciate any comments. [...]

It's similar to db2-l in that there are a great many participants, many IBMers, perhaps more broadly distributed DB2 rather than mainly OS/390, and it's a newsgroup rather than a listserv.
Listserv delivers information to your e-mail inbox. Newsgroups are just out there and accessed via a newsreader. Your browser provides a news-reader. You need to subscribe to respond, but you could just read via Deja-news. I'm sure some of the others here who participate can give you better information. [...]
