We r currently trying to execute stored procedure on DB2 UDB for OS/390 v6 from a VB program thru DB2 connect.
We had the procedure before in v5, which got migrated into v6 under SYSPROC schema, and we r able to succesfully execute this. But if we try to call the same proc defined under any other schema, say MYUSERID, (using call MYUSERID.procname), the procedure doesnt seem to get executed. It returns with the following message : [...]

We've run out of ideas on this one. Here's the situation:
Environment: DB2 OS/390 V6.1, Java Client calls Stored Procedure on OS/390
Problem: We added a 16th parameter to the Stored Procedure call. Once we did this, we started getting SQL -540 from the client java program. We can call this same SP from the mainframe and it works just fine. We've reviewed the entries in SYSROUTINES and SYSPARMs several times and it looks ok. We've stopped/started the SP, stopped/started DDF, etc and still we're having the same problem. [...]

Had the same problem with a little different scenario...and I'm not sure why we got the message we got (01503). Ours involved two external SPs with the same name, different schema, different load modules (different load libs concatenated in one SPAS)...called from a VB app.
We had to limit the SPAS' steplib to include only one of the loadlibs (the initial guess was that DB2 could magically distinguish the different programs in the concatenation by their schema names)...I think we were wrong. [...]

Even though I have just recently shifted to the DBA function from application side, I can certainly give you a hint.
When you edit your control card after unloading the table to add the new column, you can use the columns from your old existing column, while mentioning the columns for the newly added column. That way, the Load process will pick up whatever information is stored in the 'old column' position and load it into the 'new column'. [...]

The problem is that the Stored procedure is not being called using the 3-part name Location.server.Procedure name from the Java program. From OS/390 the first 2 part are defaulted and therefore is not required when calling a stored procedure. We faced the same problem when we tried to invoke a new stored procedure created in V6.1 from an VB application. Somehow the DRDA application are looking for the procedure name in SYSPROCEDURES and not SYSROUTINES. Could be a problem with the existing drivers that is used to establish connection with DB2 and needs to be upgraded. When we gave [...]

With Shark, concern about physical placement is pretty much irrelevant. Shark takes care of that in the background for you. With the large cache (8 gig!), potentially much more data can be retrieved from cache rather than directly from disk, but as far as DB2 is concerned it is still a physical I/O because it is not part of DB2 virtual memory (buffer pool) [...]

I have an outstanding enhancement for DB2 that asks for this very feature (don't hold your breath though - I raised it in 1987 or thereabouts!)

Does anyone know if there is any advantage on Shark to defining 3390-3 vs 3390-9 logical disks? My thought is that going with 3390-9's would reduce number of logical disks you have to worry about.
Check the archives on this, especially those by Joel Goldstein. I believe the bottom line on the issue you mention above is that I/O scheduling is still done at the UCB level. Assuming the 3390-9s would hold datasets for many tables/applications, more UCBs would appear to be better even with PAV. [...]

Since the trigger is on TABLE A, the trigger cannot be bypassed. So if the Trigger fails, and since you are only a single thread, your insert process fails. You are not going to bypass the failure and insert the row.
You could do this with a standalone stored procedure call, since it could ingore the failed insert into TABLE B. [...]

Precisely what data sharing, member cluster, trackmod can support. But a couple of points:
(1) Your 50,000 updates per second has not occurred yet. (2) DB2 Logging is perceived to be a potential problem.
Workloads of this level exist, logging buffers and column ordering are a design issue. To simply back away, on an assumption that DB2 cannot handle it versus describing the platform that you would be running on, are 2 very different issues. If you did not have a large plex available, then I agree. But to build a system of this nature without a large plex [...]

The discussion last time started when I pointed out that IBM weren't really supporting the deferred defined datasets in the way that most customers would have wanted them to.
As you found out, you cannot RUNSTATS a deferred object, neither can you COPY them.
The two alternatives are to make sure when you dynamically prepare your statements that you check the SPACE field in the relevant catalog table (-1 = deferred), OR (here's the plug!) use some third party software that works the way you want. i.e., automatically skipping the deferred objects [...]

To me the most important things DB2 has on offer is reliability, availability, & performance. Take away the compulsory logging and you jeopardise the reliability. Besides if you are looking at throughput (performance), you may want to consider that the number of indices on the tables MAY be more of a bottleneck than the logging. [...]

Reading out of the Landmark The Monitor for MVS. "the SRM reports a number greater than 100% whenever the CPU busy is 100% for an entire interval and at least one ready address space did not receive service at the CPU for the duration of the interval. In this case, the CPU busy percentage ranges from 100-128%, with the additional "percentage" actually representing the number of undispatched ready address spaces. Here our developers run Alter/Create for each database, comparing those scripts to the HRDEMO scripts after the DBA's perform database updates. They also run SYSAUDIT to identify "orphaned" PSoft objects, and DDDAUDIT to compare data structures defined in PTools tables against the underlying database to uncover inconsistencies.
The DBA's apply the P/S generated "scripts" only to the HRDEMO DB2 database. We then use mainframe tools (IBM and 3rd party) to actually maintain all other test and production HR databases for a number of reasons: [...]

I'm clutching at a straw here, but I notice that, in the error message PURCHASE_ORDER_HDR has apostrophes around it. My guess is that, when constructing the DBRM to be bound, DB2 is using apostrophes as the identifier escape character - instead of the more normal quotes. However, the bind process thinks that apostrophes are the string delimiter - and generating the error condition. [...]

This is strange, 'cos as far as I'm aware you're not using Data Sharing. Code 00E30100 means that either a parallel task on a DB2 terminates abnormally, or that an assisting DB2 terminates abnormally. The 906 resource indicates at it's a DB2 member, which implies DS....

For example, any reason why I might want to use DECIMAL(3,0) as opposed to SMALLINT ?
I have a member of the Systems Development team on my project that is avidly stating that numeric data that is currently stored in SMALLINT fields would be better off in DECIMAL(3,0) fields. I agree with Terry and Scott.
We have been examining this question here for the last few weeks and this is what we came up with so far.
The question of binary (integer/small integer) vs. decimal (packed decimal) is really several questions. Does your machine process packed decimal fields as fast as binary fields? Some machines it matters, others it doesn't really. Remember that most binary arithmetic can be done in registers instead of memory. If the way you manipulate the fields involves both binary and packed decimal, then you should do either all one or all the other [...]

You cannot DSN1COPY into a global temporary table.
You can only use a "real" tablespace defined in a user database. Then the dataset name for SYSUT2 is clear (as you say)

We recently expanded the size of our active logs. We went from 800 cyliners to 1600. We have our active logs going to VTS. The tapes started to span two volumes. We elected to turn on compaction in DSNZPARM. This was wonderful to get back down to one volume. However, our DR copies are on 3490 tapes. They stayed at two volumes. All our DR procedures are setup to deal with one copy, not two. We are now considering putting these 3490 DR copies back [...]

I had a question regarding the number of getpages accessed by the first statement within a package during plan invocation. In viewing the average number of getpages for the offending statement using BMC's apptune, it seemed fairly large (over 30). The statement is performing index-only access to return the data and resolve the predicate using 4 matching columns within the predicate. The index has been defined as non-unique and in our test environment consists only of the root page and 1 leaf page. At most, I would expect to see only 2 getpages for the statement. One partition went to around 13Gb no probs. Check the archives for DSSIZE 'cause I wrote a general 'eyes up' about it a few weeks ago. Basically if you stick with the IBM utilities you should be fine. If you use BMC's utilities and you a) don't go over 4Gb, but b) you want more space than is on a volume, you'll be in trouble. LoadPlus won't ask SMS to add a volume to the cluster definition. So if you fill the volume your cluster is on, that's it. [...]

This can be accomplished very easy with Platinum RC Migrator. Once you are in this tool select Quick Migration Services. It will present you with a screen to enter DB2 DDL's.
If you enter the Database name you will have the option of selecting some or all of the objects associated with the selected database. I have used this tool to build large SAP DDL sets and it worked "like a charm". [...]

If you truly want to limit the numbers stored to -999 through 999, then using a DECIMAL(3,0) data type enables DB2 to do the checking. A SMALLINT can range from -32,768 to 32,767 and an INTEGER can range from -2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647. To limit either of these to the desired range (-999 to 999) additional constraint checking would need to be performed either in the application programs, or in a CHECK constraint or TRIGGER. Perhaps the additional overhead of the programmatic/CHECK/trigger constraint check [...]

In section 7.2.4.10, Preparing a stored procedure of "DB2 UDB for OS/390 V6 Application Programming and SQL Guide", it was recommended that "if your stored procedure is a COBOL program, you must compile it with the option NODYNAM".
I prefer to have DYNAM option because it eliminates the relink process each time there is an upgrade to the software (especially when there are a lot of stored procedures to maintain). I have tested my (COBOL) stored procedure using option DYNAM and it seems to run fine (of course with the load libraries already define in the steplib [...]

(1) If Stored Procedure ABENDS, then you are in MUST ROLLBACK. If appl decideds not to ROLLBACK, and continues on, then at some point tires a COMMIT, COMMIT will fail, etc and so forth...
(2) If Stored Procedure does not "abend" or "abort", then it is up to "logic" to return the condition in an inout/output parm to the caller, the Trigger. The Trigger should then issue the SINGAL or RAISE ERROR, and hopefuly, the application is not bypassing that error checking as well. -- If app bypasses "logic" errors, not physical SQLCODE/SQLSTATE ro [...]

First a question from me:
wrt the Java, I too am looking at this, but DB2 V6.1 OS390 does not use the JVM. It requires the Java to be compiled and linked as a LE370 load module. We have IBM developers saying the compiler is free, while documentation and the sales guys say there is a cost. We have been told to purchase Visual Age for Java so we can use the compiler component. We explained we have VisualAge for Java Enterprise edition on NT, and we do not want to use the OS390 VisualAge for Java. But they [...]

But, you may have tape contention on backup tapes or log tapes. And, since you are doing separate recovery jobs, hopefully you do not have Referential Integrity rules between them.
Since you are running DB2 V6, which allows for parallel backup and recovery when you don't use tape, have you considered backing up to dasd instead of tape? DB2 OS/390 V5, V6 or V7 - No. Non-OS/390 DB2 - Yes.
As Chris stated, the subquery MAY not be required at all. If the join to TCLINICC introduces duplicate C_DEPT records then these two queries are not equivalent.
Since OS/390 does not support this syntax, then it is generally coded as a Nested Table Expression in the FROM clause which is the right table of a LEFT join (or V6 Correlated Nested Table Expression). [...]

I am a new comer for db2 and while doing my project I meet following problems which I hope I can get some help from your experiences.
I had a transaction database from a local retailer contains 2.85 million records and I try to load and process with db2 version 5 running on a 4 nodes IBM sp2 machine. I can load the db successfully but when I try to add one new column and set value to that column via update command, I got the prompt " transaction log full ". Actually I want to set the [...]

Cheers

Please ignore if you've already received this. I got a message saying my original post was rejected because it had already been sent. Don't think it was, but you never know. Anyway, ignore if you wish.

Now where were you 2-3 weeks ago when I was trying to sort out why LoadPlus was AbEnding trying to load up one of these tablespaces? Yes the DSSIZE was <=4Gb and yes the clusters were EA-enabled. Yes, the loads ran fine unless they wanted to extend beyond the volume they were already on. I had 9 TSs; one had DSSIZE [...]

If at all this is correct then what will be the difference in result ??.
