SYSCOPY records many kinds of events that affect recoverability. The type of event is denoted by the ICTYPE column. You can look at the SYSCOPY definition in the back of the SQL Reference to see what the various ICTYPE values mean.

You can use BMC C+/Modify (which is now part of the COPY PLUS product) to perform a wide range of INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE activity on SYSCOPY records, and it includes checking to try to prevent illegal operations. On the system I designed, I are not using declarative RI. Instead, we are using programmatic RI. Some believe that this is risky. For the most part, I agree with them -- unless you understand the risk.

The biggest problem with programmatic RI is the end user being able to bypass the program and perform an ad hoc update that violates RI rules. The next biggest problem is an application program that performs updates in violation of the RI rules. The last problem deals with the DBA. We did the install that way for the 99C tape so we can drop the PTDB database and create a new one, freeing all the old plans & packages and cleaning the rest of the extra stuff up along the way was the reason we decided to do it that way.
