Normally, compression can be a good thing since due to compressed row sizes, you may be able to perform fewer getpages for the same amount of work during application AND utility processing. One downside of compression is that if a table is updated frequently (not inserts or deletes), and adequate freespace is not provided on each data page, then you may be faced with the possibility of row relocation during your updates. This can kill performance not only during the update, but on subsequent selects as well if many of the rows have been relocated. You should be able [...]

You can't define a regular CHAR field with a length of 2000 since the maximum is 254. You can either use a VARCHAR or CLOB. However, you might still want to use compression since you could potentially save even more bytes even if the field is defined as varchar.

I.e. are trailing spaces significant to the application? If so, then a VARCHAR is absolutely required. If not, then a simple CHAR may be better. Especially with some languages such as COBOL which don't have a good handling of variable length characters. Also, with a VARCHAR, DB2 must return two values: The current length and the value. I recently read an article which said:
"The maximum buffer allocation per work file was increased to eight buffers in V2.3."
I wonder what that means. If we have a 20000 page bufferpool solely dedicated to DSNDB07 and we have three 4k tablespaces defined in DSNDB07 (DSN4K01, DSN4K02 and DSN4K03), does it mean that only 24 buffers (buffer allocation of 8 buffers per work file * 3 which is the number of work files) will be allocated? Most Recently Used algorithm has nothing to do with FIFO. FIFO and LIFO algorithms are based on the INSERT time of an element in a queue/stack. MRU / LRU algoritms depend on the last time of ACCESS of the element. By default DB2 uses LRU algorithm, which keeps also track of any access in a page in the bufferpool. I.e. if you read pages A, then B, then C and then read again page A, then the LRU page is page B. If you choose FIFO, you just simplify the tracking of updates. I.e. if you read pages [...]

To take advantage of the 64-bit addressing you would use data spaces instead of hiperpools.
Partial explanation for Admin. Guide:
Advantages of data spaces: With the IBM Eserver zSeries 900 (z900) along with OS/390 Version 2 Release 10 or z/OS Version 1 Release 1 64-bit real storage support, you can use data space buffer pools to configure larger buffer pools and to relieve storage constraints in DB2's ssnmDBM1 address space. A large data space buffer pool configuration has the following advantages over a similarly sized virtual buffer pool and hiperpool configuration: 1. DB2 can put changed pages in data [...]

During our project system testing on OS/390 by using the source management tool - Endevor , I ran into problems where a COBOL program failed in calling a stored procedure , it got sqlcode -444 from DB2 at the store procedure invocation. However, I am able to run [...]

But was confused by the way it has been stated in the Admin. Guide (where it appears as if MRU and FIFO are synonymous).
Thanks. Raquel.

I think that statement referred to the minimum number of buffers for a pre-fetch against the sort/work files??
I'm sure I even have the 2.3 manuals someplace in a back office.
How's the memory of you other dinosaurs on this list?

Is there a way to find out which has caused the pending status. For example, a copy pending status could come because of load replace with log no option or may be because of some other reason. How to find which has caused the pending status. Similarly how to find the reason for other pending statuses. Thanks in advance Kishore

By this you will know the last utility that has been executed on this tablespace and this would be the reason in majority of the cases.
