I agree with you. I'm told that in Italy the main cause of mainframe decrese is the high cost of software (mainframe HW is 'cheap' nowadays even for IBM products) and this maybe true but I think that IBM could decrease the prices if this should be the main problem as it happened for DASDs. [...]

You will need an additional piece of software to make the connection from DB2 to Oracle.
To get from Oracle to DB2, we currently use an Oracle synonym and a DB Link pointing to DB2 (using Oracle's Gateway for OS/390). The Gateway product only allows data to move one way, Oracle to DB2 (calls must be made from Oracle). [...]

Third party vendor costs are causing a general hardening of the arteries when the time comes for processor upgrades and subsequent heart attacks when the bill comes due. Assuming you have an index on cola in both tablea & tableb, I would expect to see a matchcols 1 for both, with a nested loop join between the two.
DB2 is not actually generating the join predicates, but instead taking the cartesian product of the two results. This will actually be the same as a join, since a cartesian product is just a join of every row from tablea with every row from tableb. [...]

You have a lot of sync I/O (death by random I/O). Why? I have no idea. It would be preferable to see the offending SQL, explain output, indexes (column cardinalities, clusterratios etc).
Common cause of death by random I/O is a nested loop join (or outer cursor and singleton select within program loop) between two tables with different clustering sequences. [...]

Not much in the way of high-tech investigations here. Migrating is a pain. The fewer times you can get away with having to do it, the better. Also, this client seems to have a penchant for out-of-date software. We must move on DB2 before the end of this year, and I can see a time when we'll be in exactly the same situation as we are now with V6. It'll probably happen here with V7 too, but at least we get a bit more breathing space. Plus it puts the client in a better position if they suddenly want [...]

That may be what you're requirement actually is, can't figure out why you would, but it is a valid SQL statement. Well it is a cartesian product, but the result is exactly the same as a join. Thus, if you changed one of the local predicates to a join predicate, you would receive the same output. For example, if there are 2 matching rows in tablea and 3 matching rows in tableb; the join would return you 6 rows, and so would the cartesian product. [...]

I'll just add to Randy's response that in both 'BMC Reorg Plus for DB2' and 'BMC LoadPlus for DB2' if you submit a job with ANALYZE ONLY in your syntax then the utility will produce a workfile allocation report telling you how big the workfiles need to be. Likewise, as Randy already pointed out, if you use dynamic allocation you don't need to worry about it because we'll dynamically allocate the datasets for you (using the characteristics described in the workfile allocation report). You also have various controls on Max-Extent-Size, SMS DATACLAS, MGMTCLAS, STORCLAS and lots more stuff. [...]

Not sure of your platform here so I'll try and be generic.
DB2 doesn't handle daylight savings time. Generally the time is requested from the os on which it is running. This is therefore always local time. You need to talk to your sysprogs/sysadms/ntadmins to find out how the os handle this. [...]

Does the Oracle ROWID or ROWNUM equivalent exist in OS/390 DB2 and I've just overlooked it all these years? If it isn't there, is there any talk of changes that might include these columns? I've found them to be useful.

The Oracle ROWID is the actual address of the row in an Oracle table. If you reorg the table, the Oracle ROWID changes.
The DB2 ROWID is the "logical" row address. If you reorg the table, you can still refer to the row by the same ROWID; however, it is more complicated than that. While the DB2 ROWID can still be used to access the row, direct access does not survive a reorg. [...]

Since V6, DB2 for OS/390 has had ROWID functionality. However it is slightly different from Oracle's implementation. A summary of the differences are: - (if I understand it correctly) Oracle's ROWID identifies where a row is stored; the ROWID for every row can be selected - DB2's ROWID provides a unique identifier for a row and also its current location; a row only has a ROWID if the table has a ROWID column. If you really need to find the most recent utility and you've got the archive logs back to then, scan the archive logs (using DSN1LOGP) looking for updates to ts DSNDB01.SYSUTILX containing the db/tsname of your tablespace.
If you need to find when the tablespace (tablepart, tables etc) statistics were last updated, find the rids for the rows that hold that information and scan the logs looking for updates to ts DSNDB06.SYSDBASE at those rids. [...]

You're right, table C is roughly the largest, but only about 2 % larger than table B.
We weren't using KEYCARD systematically, so I ran different combinations of KEYCARD and FREQVAL on these 4 tables without being able to change the accespath.
I found a solution by browsing through my old issues of DB2 magazine, in an article from Michael Hannan "hot on the tuning trail" from a 1997 issue. As described in the article, I disabled the filter factor on the new condition on table D by adding OR 0 <> 0. This did [...]

I'll take the opposite shot: autocommit is on.
When a database is modified (eg any ALTER, CREATE or DROP on an object in the database), DB2 logs the entire DBD - before and after images. In V6 and later it does this once a transaction. (Prior to V6 it did this for each modification.) [...]

The only officially recognised methods for disabling index usage are: - expression +/- 0 - expression *// 1 - expression concat '' (see V7 Admin Guide, 5.8.3.2 Summary of predicate processing, Note 9). The tablespace and table structures have to be recreated *exactly* as they were prior to the drop. Tablespace segsize etc must match. I don't think PRIQTY etc is critical.
A common error is to have a table that has been ALTERed to add a column, but has not yet been reorged. In this case you must recreate the table using the same sequence of events i.e. create a new table, ALTER ADD Column, and then DSN1COPY into it. If you were to instead create the new table with all columns initially, you would get the error you show. [...]

In an active system, that's not likely to occur often, so SYSLGRNX normally won't be a bottleneck (the updates depend on the pageset activity, so threads cannot be "fighting over it"). That assumes that some ZPARMs are set reasonably, specifically DSMAX (6000 is a typical value), PCLOSET (I suggest 20-40), LOGLOAD (depends on your logging, try to have a checkpoint every 15-30 mins), and PCLOSEN. When you DSN1COPY an image copy of a partitioned tablespace (or even a single partition of a partitioned tablespace) it uses the page numbers/RIDs to determine which datasets to dynamically allocate.
Or, at least, it used to...... (see later)
You can test this simply by 'pointing' SYSUT1 at the image copy and SYSUT2 at partition #1. Now run DSN1COPY and look for dynamic allocation messages for the other partitions. [...]

Hopefully you have the package name which is causing the problem. There is a detailed table (Table 1) at: http://nscpcw.physics.upenn.edu/db2_docs/db2c0/db2c021.htm which tells you which packages are associated with which bind files. For example, the package in my case was SQLC2D01. From the table, the associated bind file for this package is db2clpcs.bnd (a clp bind file with isolation CS). So, on the NT client, from the \sqllib\bnd I connected to the db on the server, and then issued the command: db2 bind db2clpcs.bnd blocking all grant public. That solved the problem. [...]

I forgot to mention that the testing I performed was on non-indexed columns. And therefore my answer was strictly applicable to non-indexed columns.
For indexed columns though, further tests I have performed suggests that DB2 does remove duplicates from the IN list (and I'm betting it sorts them into sequence to make this process easier - my getpage counts imply this also). And this makes sense, since it is the IN list which drives the index probes. So if duplicates were in the list, then you would retrieve duplicate rows. [...]

The 65535 track limit is for sequential datasets (per volume). DB2 clusters are VSAM: their limit is 4Gb for normal clusters and 64Gb for extended clusters. These clusters can have extents occur across multiple volumes.
For segmented tablespaces (and simple tablespaces - which you wouldn't use apart from catalog and directory use), DB2 will allocate extentsion clusters when the first is full. Their names end with A002, A003 .... A0016. So they can use up to 16 x 4Gb = 64 Gb per tablespace. (They cannot use extended clusters.) [...]

This more or less implies that it can (should) be run only on TSs that are uncompressed. In your case, obviously most TSs are already compressed. A report saying the saving is 0 in case of an already-compressed TS is simply wrong. The saving is PAGESAVE. We are planning to upgrade from DB2 V5 to DB2 V7.
We are using Coolgen 4.1A and Oracle Transparent Gateway 4.01.1. with DB2 V5. However, both are no longer supported and are not certified for DB2 V7.
Will either of the above products still work with DB2 V7 ?

I think the DSN1COMP is a stand alone utility and this is the reason it can't check the catalog whether a tablespace is already compressed or not. This is the reason it considers it as an error message.

What is the actual code you use for parameter and the code used to move the message. If you have, for a COBOL example,
01 LK-MESSAGE 05 LK-MESSAGE-LEN PIC S9(4) COMP. 05 LK-MESSAGE-DATA PIC X(72). ... MOVE 'SHORT MESSAGE' TO LK-MESSAGE-DATA
you are moving 72 characters into LK-MESSAGE-DATA (includes the trailing spaces). Are you doing something like this? [...]

DSNDB01.DBD01, DSNDB01.SYSUTILX, and DSNDB06.SYSCOPPY Image copies are not recorded in SYSCOPY, instead the corresponding entry is written to the log stream. That means that if you do a RECOVER on these TSs, DB2 has to search the logs backward to find the recovery dataset information. Depending on the number of active logs and their sizes, this most likely means that archive logs have to be recalled. I guess that's where your two hours are mostly spent. Doing a manual HRECALL should speed the process up. [...]

Since you are V6, the simplest is merely to wrap the literals or hostvariables in the UCASE or LCASE function in the values clause dependant on whether you want upper or lower case. Such as:
INSERT INTO TABLE VALUES (UCASE(:HV1), LCASE(:HV2), UCASE('abc')) etc.....

I dunno about CoolGen either, but we've got OTG 4.0.1.1 and SQL*Net 8.0.3.0.5 and we're also going to be upgrading DB2 from V5 to V7. Harvey's right in that you (and I) will have to upgrade the OTG (and SQL*Net, which apparently comes with the OTG) to 8.1.7, which is the version that supports DB2 V7. [...]

If you want to query one subsystem from another, you could go into QMF and 'Select * from ssid.Sysibm.Sysdatabase' and see what happens. Or, in SPUFI, you could give the ssid at the '10 Connection Location' field and try to connect there.
Hope this helps,

Sorry for not replying sooner - got caught up in stuff and then forgot this for awhile. Glenn, the solution you suggest won't work for SAS as SAS assumes the name of the package is the name of the plan. By which I mean it seems to take the program name from the plan name, and then go searching in Sysibm.Syspackage for a package of this name. The only answer if you wanna pick your own plan name is to edit the package to match your chosen name and bind that. Thanks to Ermanno and others [...]
