You're pretty much on the money with your explanation -- some other process is probably holding locks and the Online Reorg SWITCH phase sits and waits for the locks to be freed. I've had the same problem from time to time.

Unfortunately, I never found a good way to find out who the culprit was, as there were no messages issued unless a timeout occurred. Dennis, other than obtaining a reading on your specific question, "when is a rid chain for duplicate keys too long?", I'm having a difficult time trying to determine what you would actually do with this information... And, too long for what? To cut down on long rid chains - your only option is to get rids of duplicate rows, or change the key to be more distinct. Architecturally, there is no such thing as too long, outside of object size limitations.

Practically, the answer is when the index does not give you the performance you want. Another criteria might be, does DB2 use this index to get back only the rows that are desired?

The purpose of an index is to get you to a record or set of records faster. If you have an index that has 1,000,000 RIDS hung off a single key, then I would really question the value of that index, unless you have an object with billions of rows and you [...] 6014 137 45_Re: Online Reorg causing Unavailable Resource17_Kornblum, Kenneth24_Kenneth_Kornblum@BMC.COM31_Wed, 30 Oct 2002 15:58:46 -0600383_iso-8859-1 Hint for users of BMC Reorg Plus for DB2

We have an application with many partitioned tablespaces. Developers are working on a process that will make changes to columns in the partitioning key, via SQL update stmts. Yes, we DROP the temp tables (DTTs) before creating them since they will remain with thread reuse.

We also experienced locks being held on the DB2 tables, so we are issuing a COMMIT to free DB2 resources after a unit of work is completed. Maybe this is another index-related myth. These myths never die, they just fade away.

Long RID chains were a common performance problem with type 1 indexes, making delete of a single row very slow. The symptoms were high CPU time and many seq prefetch requests. The reason was that DB2 had to search the RID chain until it found the RID that points to the row to be deleted. The standard solution was to add the primary key to the index if any key value has more 10,000 RIDs. We are using Secondary authids and ACF2 to secure our databases. The natural tendency is to group secondary authids by application.

So we would have app1: 2ndary auth app1.tbl1 idapp1

app2: app2.tbl2 idapp2

A third app is a 'global' enterprise app: global.tbl3 idglobal

I believe ACF2 does not allow groups within groups (e.g. group idapp1 would have group idlgobal included in it). So that leaves us in a quandry. CREATE TRIGGER DHSDB2.TRCSBSABI00 NO CASCADE BEFORE INSERT ON DHSDB2.TBCSBSA REFERENCING NEW AS NewRow FOR EACH ROW MODE DB2SQL WHEN ((NewRow.INDV_SQNM = 0) OR (NewRow.INDV_SQNM is null)) Begin atomic SET NewRow.INDV_SQNM = ( SELECT COALESCE(MAX(INDV_SQNM),0)+1 FROM DHSDB2.TBCSBSA WHERE INDV_ID=NewRow.INDV_ID ); end; [...] 11136 136 45_Re: Online Reorg causing Unavailable Resource13_David S Waugh16_dsw-dba@JUNO.COM29_Thu, 31 Oct 2002 22:24:37 GMT467_- Good point Eric. If you wanted to be really thorough, you probably should issue 3 displays: -DIS DB(dbname) SPACE(tsname,ixname1,ixname2,...) CLAIMERS ONLY -DIS DB(dbname) SPACE(tsname,ixname1,ixname2,...) LOCKS ONLY -DIS DB(dbname) SPACE(tsname,ixname1,ixname2,...) USE ONLY

that should catch just about anything that might interfere with the SWITCH phase.

I am looking at more then one cursor declaration that start off as:

I will try to look around in some of my older ACF2 documentation and see how that was done. I know it can be done however if you should consider doing a conversion to RACF at some future date it does cause some problems because RACF does not allow groups within groups. Can some guru help us here!11_Linda Ayeni22_lindaayeni@HOTMAIL.COM31_Thu, 31 Oct 2002 20:51:58 -0700585_- Dear listers, We are DB2 V6 and currently developing a "in-house" replication process for our web application. We have created a DB2 Log extract strategy that produces DML activity report. This report is critical to our web application and data integrity is absolutely no 1. We extract log data for a given set of tables and after massaging the extract file, FTP the output to webserver for application use. The problem (if it is a problem) is this: After extracting from the archive or current log for a given date range, we are discovering multiple INSERTS for the same table [...]
