Did you make changes in the MAXLOCKS/NUMLKTS settings? With Rowlevel locking you are probably holding a lot more locks in your process. If inserts are taking place at the end, an empty page is build in the bufferpool and one pagelock is taken. Now with RLL 1 lock per row is taken, which is "records per page" times more. So, check if you are experiencing lock escalation. I would suggest to use a MAXLOCKS of zero and therewith not allowing for lock escalation. Check your NUMLKUS setting, because this will be the limit for your total thread. One reason for timeout for insert and row level locking could be: you are inserting a row with a duplicate key. In order to be certain, that this really a duplicate DB2 has to wait for the other thread until it commits.

We have a time-partitioned fact table in our DB2/390 data warehouse. The rows are fairly long, and each partition contains about 55M-60M rows. Data is loaded to this table weekly, and a week's input contains data which may be as much as three weeks old (never more).

We have written a COBOL program which generates the COPY statement for the current week's data and the two previous weeks; we only run COPY on these three most recent partitions (each partition has a unique GDG for its image copies). In our team, we are discussing about the way DB2 manages its LOGs when doing ROLLBACK.

The case:

We are running an application performing a lot of updates in DB2, without doing COMMIT. DB2 fills its LOG BUFFERS and ACTIVE LOG (ACTLOG1). Then, we submit the command ARCHIVE LOG. As a consequence, the LOG BUFFERS are externalized, the ARCHLOG1 is created and the ACTIVE LOG used is the next available: ACTLOG2 During this time, the application continues to run, always without COMMITING. We resubmit an ARCHIVE LOG command, creating ARCHLOG2 and passing to ACTLOG3 After a while, we [...] 3088 61 32_Re: DB2 and ROLLBACK discussion.14_Wayne Driscoll24_wayne.driscoll@QUEST.COM31_Wed, 17 Sep 2003 09:38:01 -0500385_us-ascii Christian, As long as ACTLOG1 and ACTLOG2 are still reusable, DB2 will read from them. You should check to see if there is a filter profile created for this package. In the filter profile is an option to summarize by dynamic SQL text. The valid valuies are y,n, and h. Yes and no are hopefully obvious, the "h" says to summarize only if there are host variables present. The "h" is important, because if the statement has no host variables, then all the statements will summarize into one line item on the report. The only way to get summarization is through the presence of host variables. No, those work datasets don't have to be written to DASD.

You can give the work datasets a "permanent" DSN, code (NEW,CATLG,CATLG) if I recall correctly, and specify whatever your installation requires (UNIT= and naming convention requirements are common) to write them to tape. It seems that there is a problem with the SYNCSORT utility that probably cannot deal with such amount of data (we have 7 composite indexes on the table). IBM tech support didn’t help us figuring this out. Anyway, to solve this problem we dropped all the indexes, performed the REORG and than rebuild the indexes one by one. In the past, some third party vendors' utilities require the existence of IBM utilities in order to function correctly. Check with your third party vendor to see if this is still true. DB2 often underestimates (sometimes severely in the case of variable-length rows) the number of rows in a tablespace and passing this to the sort program. This leads to x37 abends when the dynamic sortworks run out of space. 2. DB2 creates too many subtasks. This leads to S878 abends (GETMAIN error). Thanks to y'all, but we aren't using SYNCSORT. So, may be SYNCSORT is not your problem either. As I see this problem, sort had already ended at the time the job abended. My original problem was a LOAD REPLACE that abended and lefted 2 indexes in REBUILD PENDING. Couldn't restart LOAD, so I tried REBUILD. Couldn't run REBUILD, so I went to LOAD REPLACE again (this time, with the necessary JCL so it don't abend when asking for the sixth cartridge). But I'd really would like to know why REBUILD abended (as other people in the list, as I see). SYNCSORT has a parameter you can pass to allow it to handle very large sort files (there's also a special DDname you can add to your JCL, IIRC, but I don't remember exactly what it is). Check the archives over in IBM-MAIN for details.

Also, instead of specifying SORTNUM 5, it might be better if you allocate the SORTWK datasets specifically in your JCL.
