Question on PIT Recovery for DB2 V6 OS/390.

I need to recover a database to yesterday 1400 hrs due to some application team inserting bad data.

My understanding is for PIT recover we need to find the start RBA using DSN1LOGP and then to recover using TORBA.

What is procedure to find out the RBA in the DSN1LOGP output for a certain point of time to which i want to recover ? You can see a list of all the archives and their times if you run the bootstrap print program, DSNJU004. Then you would run the DSN1LOGP utility, using that log archive as input, and use something like this for SYSIN: RBASTART(000000000000) RBAEND(FFFFFFFFFFFF) SUMMARY(ONLY) Then search the printout for the INSERT activity around the 1400 time period, (hopefully you know an AUTHID as well, and try to find [...] 4006 132 41_Re: Report Recovery Utility - PIT Recover0_16_khampto1@TXU.COM31_Thu, 30 Oct 2003 16:27:06 -0600514_us-ascii Ravi, looks like Andy has a very good point, but if no good point of recovery can be found from SYSCOPY, my way might still work.

It happened to me some times and we use archive logs as 'timeline' for DB2 (we use timestamp as a part of archive file name), as suggested. It's easy if the time between two consecutive updates is long. But it happens very rarely.

If the evil updates are few, probably you know which they are (as you can say 'This is bad update executed at xx:yy:zz time ') and in this case is better to eliminate them via SQL delete. Of course if they are few. As you said, the application is bound with isolation CS and Currentdata NO, the Lock Avoidance algorithm will be applied and that means, that DB2 will avoid a lock, if it is safe, that the row was not updated. Because an application holds an X lock on that page, only the punc bit could tell DB2, that a lock is not necessary. But DB2 requests a lock, so I conclude, that the punc bit is on. For ambiguous select statement to have lock avoidance work fine the following options hold good. ACQUIRE(USE), RELEASE(DEALLOCATE), ISLVL(CS) and CURRENTDATA(NO). This lock avoidance works fine with release(deallocate) if the intent of the program is read only. As you have mentioned that only few programs is the cause of time out , check for that particular program to see whether the intent is read only. If that is the case then release(deallocate) would work fine. With isolation CS and CURRENTDATA=NO (for ambiguous/unambiguous read-only cursors) the lock (conditional lock) must be taken because CS doesn't admit uncommitted data and doesn't want 'dirty' pages (Bonnie Baker dixit) even if no rows qualify. With UR BIND parameter you might avoid (if it's possible) it as the lock evauation is done at an 'higher' level (with Bonnie Baker's And Terrizzano's flows in my mind). Yes of course BIND parameter UR affects the whole package. I suggested it as you said that WITH UR is difficult to implement in a 3rd party application and in any case this must be agreed with the programmer who made the application. I completely agree with you that WITH UR in fetches/select has a better granularity. I think, you cannot use a SELECT-statement in a SET-clause. Look up SQL Reference for the syntax of the SET transition variable.

If your application is completly contained with no hope of ever making calls to the data from outside the application, then subroutines would make more sense. Not many applications like this anymore. By default it is set OFF.

Set to OFF, you get one long message of all the messages, with an 'index' at the front. Set to ON, you get a message containing 1 message for each message posted, plus 1 message with the index. Would it be Phil, who is apparently modifying profiles in order to advertise his consulting business and Web site; or would it be Jacques, who is complaining about Phil's actions?

I have variously had my profile set for DIGEST or NOMAIL, and now it has been set to MAIL without any action on my part. I have a DRDA connection from OS/390 DB2 V5 to AIX DB2 V7.1 working OK. But whenever the AIX server goes down, the response time for a CONNECT (in a program running on CICS) is about 3 minutes. Is there any parameter on ZPARM to check, or what can I do to have a quicker response time in this situation? Thanks in advance, Horacio [...] 12237 178 45_Re: Check out some new entries on the DB2ZONE0_26_Phil.Sevetson@WAKEFERN.COM31_Fri, 31 Oct 2003 17:04:47 -0500346_us-ascii With an attitude/manners like that, he doesn't have to bother applying for a job in any organization I'll ever work for. The overhead of collecting the trace data only occurs once. That overhead is part of the TCB processing of the application.

The overhead of sending the DB2 data to SMF will be a new cost and will be added to the TCB time for the application. But we've got 157 packages in this collection in the maintenance system, 676 (!) in Test/Dev, between 64 and 75 on the SAP ssids, and 326 in Prod... why these differences? Is it an indicator of different usage of DB2 Connect on these systems? And are really all of these packages needed, or do we again have leftovers from previous installs? Unfortunately I'll be sunsetting my system and I need to understand what objects are being accessed. Yes, that's all. Not how much or how well it is being accessed, but just that it IS being accessed. The feeling is that there are large tables that may not be accessed anymore, and can be dispensed with (or at least archived), when we send the system across country. When migrating lists things like digest and no mail do not come with the output from listserv software. After the initial migration, a bug with hyperthreading on the new W2k server and the list software was discovered, so I had to reinstall all the software again Thursday morning, and re-add all users with a batch job...so subscribers who we had unsubscribed after the initial migration became subscribed again. Also, in the past, many people have been set to NO MAIL which [...]
