We are debating within our core group to ensure what would be a better architecture for a .NET application (Web and 3 Tier Client servers apps). To disconnect on every SQL from the database (with Connection pooling on .NET, it doesn't actually disconnect) or to wrap the contiguous SQL statements in a TXN and disconnect after database access?. In the first case we would have AUTOCOMMIT ON to commit after every SQL. In the second case AUTOCOMMIT would be overridden due to the TXN wrapping. Can you please, give your thoughts on the following problem.

1. We haven't received any sample DBCS data from our MVS DB2 source system to test the Load / Unload tables onto our MVS Unicode development database. Therefore, we are creating the DBCS data by loading the Unicode tables with current production SBCS data and then Unload the data from the same table in UNICODE format. Probably not.

The checkpoints in the BSDS are system checkpoints and do not mean, that all the applications running in this db2 subsystem are at a consistent point as well.

During a system checkpoint there can be in-flight UR's as well.

The implication is that the (large) table is in a T/S of its own so you probably need to choose 8/16/32K pages then define that (new) T/S and a matching bufferpool + Temp BP.

This will allow you to do a redirected restore of the T/S in question. The new T/S would be DMS and the containers would thus be under your control, in terms of physical placement and sizes. I tend to keep all such containers at the same size for space-management purposes (it allows use of the "(extend all)" option). The crystal ball is getting very cloudy with regards to DB2 timetables. Some of the things to keep in mind that would influence end-of-service for V7 are the number of remaining customers on V6 (will change rapidly as EOS draws near in June of next year) and adoption rates for V8. In unofficial conversations I get the general impression that IBM is pleased with the adoption of V8 to this point. This could be impacted by IBM marketing offers that will allow some customers to use V8 for all of 2005 with no increase in monthly charges (I.E. continue [...] 4661 43 48_PeopleTools upgrade rebuilds application tables!0_30_Steve_Grimes@AISMAIL.WUSTL.EDU31_Wed, 24 Nov 2004 13:23:55 -0600413_us-ascii Hello, DB2 v7.1, Z/os 1.4 here.

If your COBOL program consists of STATIC SQL statements, then I would suggest you to produce as many packages as you have multiply databases. Actually, you have no other choice.

Even if you do not specify Qualifier, BIND will set it for you. Usually, it will be your SQLID ( or OWNER , I do not remember, but it does not matter). With this QUALIFIER ( let's say that it matches one of your database's tables Creator) BIND will check for existence, authorization and ask the Optimizer to choose the most efficient access path for real tables. to my knowledge, you cannot. It is possible to use the STACK option - which will force DB2 to write the IC datasets contiguously on the tape(s).

As far as I know, You can not refer back to an existing tape volser using listdef / template combination. By using STACK option, you don not need to play with LABEL. STACK YES automatically generates and use Labels.

For the second question, If you restart(current) your IC then it'll continue from the last IC taken. The easiest way to prevent all access is to stop the tablespace. You say that is not an option. Are you afraid that someone will simply start it?

I can think of two other methods to prevent all access. 1. Assign the tablespace to its own bufferpool and reduce the number of buffers to zero. 2. Create image copies, stop the tablespace, delete the underlying vsam data sets, start the tablespace. Dbadm or sysadm can change the bufferpool assignment or recover the tablespace, of course, so this is not perfect protection. I know of no way to block dbadm [...] 6130 121 20_Re: large and dssize11_Tom Moulder30_tom.moulder@TREXASSOCIATES.COM31_Fri, 26 Nov 2004 10:06:52 -0600574_Windows-1252 There is a relationship between the number of partitions, the LARGE keyword and the DSSIZE specification. The "Large" keyword allows more than 64 partitions. So what I have done is inserted this table to show the possible values. From this table I would hope that you could find the one that fits you best. As with most things in DB2, what you should use depends upon what is most important to you. To add to Michael Ebert's suggestions.

1. We put all mapping tables in one tablespace. As he said, they can be tiny. 2. We also create the index on a mapping table with priqty 720 secqty large. 3. At the end of the online reorg we want to shrink the mapping table index back to minimum size. No sense in taking up dasd unnecessarily. Since the mapping table never has rows, rebuild index (without reuse) will reallocate the index data set back to 1 cyl (and quickly). RC=4 occurs along with a message that the index is empty.
