We are pleased to announce that the IDUG-sponsored DB2 Listserve (DB2-L) has been restored. A team of very dedicated volunteers has been working literally night and day to restore service following an outage that occurred Friday, July 27. The outage was caused when the organization that hosts the DB2-L moved the server to a new installation. Prior to the move, IDUG was informed the move would cause minimal disruption and therefore no warnings were posted to the list. Unfortunately, a significant disruption did occur and as a result the DB2-L was unavailable from July 27 - August [...] 176 63 0_21_wfavero@attglobal.net21_wfavero@ATTGLOBAL.NET31_Sun, 12 Aug 2007 01:12:23 -0400665_iso-8859-1 Hey, hey, hey.. the gang is back..

Last time I tried to post this, DB2-L died. Hope it doesn't have the same effect this time! Seriously, thanks to everyone who worked to get the service back.

I have at last managed to run some test traces to see what lock avoidance takes place for a cursor FOR UPDATE. The tests were conducted on a DB2 V9 NFM subsystem and involved a COBOL program with a single cursor defined FOR UPDATE with a WHERE clause that caused only a subset of rows to qualify. Of these qualifying rows, COBOL conditional logic was used to ensure that [...] 735 91 30_Reorg tablespace with SQL JOIN16_Michael Liberman18_mliberman@DTCC.COM31_Mon, 13 Aug 2007 11:08:55 +0100583_US-ASCII Good morning/Afternoon,

You don't specify, but I assume we're talking DB2 for z/OS

Let's follow the life of a row

A new row is "born" in an application which issues an INSERT statement to add it to a table in a compressed tablespace. Before the row is actually added to the page, DB2 uses the compression dictionary to see if the row compresses smaller than it's original length (yes, it IS possible for a compressed row to be bigger than its uncompressed version!). Sounds like you are restoring from an online backup. In that case you will also need the log files from the start of the backup to the minimum recovery point.

Look at "overflow log path" on the rollforward command.

IBM manual: CACHE integer-constant Specifies the maximum number of values of the sequence that DB2 can preallocate and keep in memory. Preallocating values in the cache reduces synchronous I/O when values are generated for the sequence. The actual number of values that DB2 caches is always the lesser of the number in effect for the CACHE option and the number of remaining values within the logical range.
