We have several testing subsystems prior to Production. We recompile programs in all environments up to the environment just before Production. In that environment, and Production, we just move the underlying components and do the necessary BINDs. We unexpectedly got hit with the -104 syntax error below. What code page are you? The reason I ask is that I ran into a problem when turning on the V8 precompiler (once we were V8 CM everywhere) at a previous employer. They had C code that used the ¬ symbol X'5F' - but it was worse than that, in that they'd changed their 3270 emulation software to switch the less-than symbol X'4C' to be X'5F' so it would pass the C compiler - very complicated. You're right, it was a precompiler option I got changed not a bind parm. The value 0 returned in your cobol calling program seemed to indicate that you have successfully called your sql stored procedure but because it did not return +466, it looks like that the result set was not returned.

1. Did you specify WITH RETURN in the Declare Cursor statement in the SQL procedure? 2. It[s somewhat dependant upon your version of DB2. Then, different traces incur overhead in different places as you know.

The actg traces impact the applications, and the heaviest impact is the package level classes.

Unless you have a total sandbox, with a driver system, you can't really measure your overheads because you can't guarantee workload consistency. Try this:

1) Confirm the SQL in the procedure is proper and executable by invoking it via the development center as an independent call and not use the editor

2) Confirm that, if you have a cursor, it's defined "WITH RETURN" and do NOT CLOSE the cursor in the SP, otherwise, you'll lose the result set. [...] 8823 178 43_Re: DB2 z/OS Determining the Cost of an I/O10_Jorg Lueke23_jorg_h_lueke@BCBSMN.COM31_Wed, 31 Oct 2007 21:47:54 -0500396_ISO-8859-1 Joel,

What specifically is meant by a physical i/o? Is that just when you have to go all the way to the disk? Do caches count? What about i/o to memory (DB2 bufferpool)?

Also, where is the processor cost accounted for in SMF, back to the application?

A physical IO is going to DASD. Finding the data in the controller cache is till an IO, the instruction path length does not change.

If you are finding your data in a bufferpool, this is not an IO.

The processor cost for a Synch IO is charged to the application address space, and reflected in the smf 101 record.
