Hi Peter,
You should be able to connect using a v8 32 bit "gateway" instance. So the v7 client points to a v8 32 bit server instance which then points to the v9 server instance. The database is catalogued as a remote database on the v8 server instance. [...]

6 months ago we moved some critical database of an application from DB2 for LUW to DB2 for z/OS. I did the research/benchmark of similar methods and finally we decided to use x-loader.
We were happy with overall performance and outage time when compared with others. It's easy to implement. Do not worry about the pwd in catalog. For security reasons, we populated the DDF table just before migration and then deleted all of them and changed the pwd on AIX. [...]

First of all, COBOL-programs can be rewritten, so if a small change can result in better performance, it's reasonable. Did you try the COALESCE-flavour?
If no sort occurs, then the best way to code that SQL would be:
SELECT SOME_COLS FROM MY_TABLE WHERE PK1 = ? AND PK2 = ? AND PK3 = ? AND PK4 = ? AND (NON_INDEX_COL LIKE 'A%' OR NON_INDEX_COL LIKE 'B%' OR NON_INDEX_COL LIKE 'C%' OR NON_INDEX_COL LIKE 'D%') ORDER BY PK5 DESC FETCH FIRST 1 ROW ONLY [...]

Pat's right that the clue here is that DB2 doesn't think the leading index column (s) are matching, because the hint doesn't result in MATCHCOLS > 0.
Once level 2 support received the SQL, it seems they have found the root cause of the problem. Although your DB2-L post had parentheses around the ORs, the SQL sent in for the PMR did not. And that is why matching index access is not possible. Once the parentheses are coded around the ORs, then MATCHCOLS=5 is obtained. [...]

I had written the SQL on here the way it should have been written. I never even saw that the actual SQL was missing the parens around the AND/OR conditions. It ended up being a waste of a lot of folks time, very sorry about that. I completely missed that the parens were missing in the original SQL and it looks like increased processing time was due to increase of data in the table. So the SQL was written as: SELECT SOME COLS FROM MY_TABLE WHERE PK'S [...]

If I were wanting to use static SQL in a situation in which front-end Windows .NET programs are accessing a DB2 for z/OS-managed database, I'd have the .NET programs call DB2 for z/OS stored procedures through DB2 Connect (which supports ODBC, OLE DB, ADO.NET, and other APIs). Now, I am aware of such an equivalent. I just found out earlier today that IBM's Data Studio pureQuery Runtime 2.1, announced earlier this year, delivered the capability of transforming .NET applications to use static SQL, without the need to change any code (note that the 2.2 release of this product was recently announced, along with a name change: it's now called Optim pureQuery Runtime). If there are any records padded with more or less spaces infront of the constant that you have specified, it will cause unusual results. However if there is always 2 spaces to the left of the constant (as you have written below), it should work as expected. Anything to the right of the specified constant is padded with x'FF' to the required length, meaning a value of ' 0199abc' will also be included in the partition with value ' 0199' [...]

I was trying to experiment with DB2 SQL Replication .As it was new to me so I followed the IBM info center tutorial. And I was successful in creating the Replication setup using SAMPLE db using DB2 9.5 WSE on Windows. I used source server as SAMPLE and target server as COPYDB in the same machine.I could see the result of Replication by changing the source table , there was instant update in target table. [...]

Are the stored procedures native or external one? are you running in which DB2 version? Do you have source code of all of them? If yes, there are two ways;
1. Compile using basic SQL compiler which generates DBRM. 2. Install the stored procedures using JCL same used for running SQLs thourgh JCL using IKJEFT01 program. 3. Bind packages, give grants on stored procedures and on packages. [...]

Please correct incase I am wrong.

If I understand correctly, you seem to be trying to partition the table by the first 5 bytes of column c1 and the first 3 bytes of column c2.
Unfortunately you can't do that. When you specify multiple values in a limit key they are simply concatenated together and applied to the whole key - they do not correspond to the individual columns in the key. [...]

From my experience, it sounds as though you have a very balanced workforce. I would agree with your opinion that the configuration is not unusual for the size of your company. The fact that your department handles the DB2 migration and maintenance, along with 3rd party products most certainly keeps everyone very busy. Typically, in large organizations, a Systems department handles these maintenance functions. Thereby, allowing the DBA's to focus on the data. As far as centralization is concerned, it's the only way to go in a large organization. Many companies tried decentralization during the 1990's, and many [...]

1. We are running data sharing. Hi! I've worked at eight enterprises as a DBA, starting in 1991, and seen three kinds of models; totally centralized, decentralized-with-centralized-sysprogs, and (for really large companies) a mix of centralized DBAs for production control and support, with application support DBAs attached to particular (large) projects.
Your staffing levels are not out of line for a company of your size, depending on some things; you describe an environment with high volumes of work. Depending on what tool support you have, this could lead to either a lot of people or a few good, expensive tools. Change management in a heavily [...]

Unfortunately, indeed, with DB2 for z/OS (and still in version 9!) you need the nonstandard SELECT expr FROM SYSIBM.SYSDUMMY1 to mimic a one-row VALUES statement. According to the SQL Reference for DB2 9 (at p. 1521), the VALUES statement is only available as the body of a trigger. [...]

You state that "when you specify multiple values in a limit key they are simply concatenated together and applied to the whole key - they do not correspond to the individual columns in the key."
Has that been your experience? The DB2 for z/OS V8 SQL Reference contains information that contradicts your statement on two points: 1) From the description of the ENDING AT option of the CREATE TABLE statement: "The first value [when multiple values follow an ENDING AT specification] corresponds to the first column of the key, the second value to the second column, and so on." It doesn't get updated until RUNSTATS have been run. That is, a tablespace can go into a second piece and DSNUM will still show 1 not 2. I did a simple test to prove this.
So DSNUM is totally unreliable for dataset names. How to identify the number of dataset pieces is a good question? [...]

I'm currently using a GMAIL address as my regular ISP decided that all mail from the group is considered a spam on such level that they block it before it reaches my mailbox. I'm trying to make them change it - but up to now with no success ... :-( The GMAIL account will be the one I'm using until I'll solve that problem. Direct mail works fine with that ISP ... [...]

You should in that case consider setting your "Subscriber's Corner" setting of "Mail delivery disabled temporarily" to YES.

Maybe I should have read the manual first! If I ever find out where I got that idea, I'll certainly let you know - I haven't actually tested it. Our limit keys always specify the full column width for all columns except maybe the last, so the effect is exactly the same. [...]

Hi Dear Listers
We have DB2 v9.1 ,on Z/OS.We use next JCL to copy full a tablespace on TAPE;
//IMGCPY EXEC DSNUPROC,SYSTEM=DSNM,UID='IMAGCOPY' ... //COPY33 DD UNIT=TAPE, // DSN=IMGCOPY.DSNM.FULL.CU.TSTXN(+1), // DISP=(,CATLG), // VOL=(,RETAIN,,,SER=SATDAY), // LABEL=(33,SL) ..... //SYSIN * .. COPY TABLESPACE CU.TSTXN DSNUM ALL FULL YES SHRLEVEL CHANGE COPYDDN(COPY33)
COPY 32 TABLESPACEs IS CORRECT AND ABOUT 3 MONTHS ,we are using this JCL ,and every thing is OK; [...]

From memory I think this means that either the tape is bad or the drive is bad (may need cleaning).
I'm sure I have seen this before .. Others maybe able to give you a more accurate diagnosis.
No matter what I would pull the tape anyway - as a matter of precaution and get your tape operators to clean the drives. [...]

Personally, I'd pass this to your storage people with a view to discarding the physical tape.
