If your buffer pools aren't seeing a lot of MVS paging, then there isn't a penality. Otherwise, you may want to size it better or get more real storage.
IBM uses a hash implementation to find pages in the buffer pool, so CPU time used to find things in the buffer pool remains the same reguardless of the size of the buffer pool (very nice). In fact, if the increase in the buffer pool will avoid more I/O you'll probably see a reduction in [...]

I have a question concerning indices on foreign keys in our shop. We automatically generate indices on foreign keys. A survey on SYSIBM.SYSPACKDEP has shown that quite a number of those indices is not being used by packages. Now we're wondering whether we can drop those indices without any harm or whether those indices will be used by DB2 internally to check on RI, especially when deleting rows from dependent tables. You're right, of course. I'm just clutching at straws. I thought of ROWID partitioning as a possible option because the underlying data structure's clustering keys does not lend itself to partitioning. The application's default clutering key (on any table) is the table's unique key. Doh! [...]

There is a Database Manager Configuration parameter called DIAGLEVEL. History never lies...At some point in time someone took an image copy with RECOVERYDDN specified in the image copy control card. This is just a warning and can be ignored if you do not intend to perform disaster recovery by bringing up DB2 as 'recovery site'. Many installations create two image copies of a tablespace, one for local recovery (COPYDDN) and one for disaster recovery purposes (RECOVERYDDN). At the disaster recovery site, DSNZPARM is changed to recovery site and DB2 calls for image copies created with the RECOVERYDDN DD. [...]

A good complement to BMC's Activity Monitor is BMC's Apptune solution.
APPTUNE quickly identifies the largest, resource-consuming, performance-constrained or error-prone SQL statements. It delivers a precise assessment of SQL statement performance by providing data that has been collected and correlated to the time DB2 spent processing the SQL statement.
Apptune will work well to help you find and fix the problems you are having with your dynamic SQL (static SQL, too). [...]

A few suggestions:
1. Check that the DB2DAS00 service is running properly on the DB2 server. If the DAS has died, then job scheduling goes with it. We have the oldest imagecopy datasets copied on 99189(julian date) (July 8th 1999). We have the archive logs from 99189 onwards till today(99281). But the BSDS (as it can hold a maximum of 1000 archive log datasets) has the oldest archive log entry for 99229 (August 17th 1999).(The reason is we experience approximately 18 (average) archive log activities per day Which is absurd & we are trying to reduce them to 2 per day by increasing the size of ACTIVE log datasets. Simply run the restore database command using your V2 backup copy, the migration to V5 will be done on the fly. You might have problems with the migration depending on how big your logs where in the V2 database. If you encounter a -1704 rc 3 (migration failed, logs full) just go to the control center and make the logs for the resored db larger, then run the migrate database comand against the restored db. We use FTP for a similar process. If you are worried about integrity, write a little CRC generator. Run it on the MVS side, FTP the CRC value to the unix side (this also make a conveient "all the data has been sent" indicactor if needed) and rerun the CRC (of course, you'll have to take the EBCDIC to ASCII conversion into account) on the unix side and compare it to the MVS CRC check. If they match, good; if not, not. [...]

What does the following SQL reveal:
SELECT * FROM SYSIBM.SYSCOPY WHERE DBNAME = 'DBxxxx' AND TSNAME = 'TSxxxxxx' AND ICTYPE = 'F' AND ICBACKUP='RP' ?
If it does produce some rows, you might want to run a MODIFY RECOVERY to delete the rows. You won't, then, get this message.

One option, out of left field:
I don't ___think___ that there is any particular information in the log that identifies the log dataset. So, you could concatenate several archive log datasets into one big dataset, recording the begining and end RBA of the little archive that went into the big dataset. Then edit the BSDS to replace the little (al-be-them real) archives with your big archives. [...]

At a risk of sounding like a broken record... "it depends!" In a previous incarnation, I used to run SQL to display tablespaces without image copies taken in the last week (insert i/c frequency here). I also use to run (weekly) a REPAIR DBD TEST DATABASE on each database I administered to check that the OBIDs were consistent. (This certainly saved my skin on one occasion.) If you're a development DBA, you could craft SQL to pick out violations of naming standards. I would also recommend Bill's suggestion of running post-RUNSTATS Health check SQL. If you have authority, run [...]

My suggestion to you would be to automate as many of the routine tasks as you possibly can given the tools at your disposal. If you can set up your environment to determine what is good and what is bad and to alert you when the "bad" happens: e.g. reorg needed, potential out of space situation, nearing bufferpool threshold, etc. etc. That way you will be informed when the problem happens and can respond accordingly. You can automate using vendor tools, Rexx, or whatever scripting/programming tools you have at your disposal. Even a minimal amount of automation can save [...]

No one would write code that added that kind of overhead. When an insert occurs, it probes based on value. If UNIQUE and value matched, forget it, no insert. If NON-UNIQUE and valued matched, INSERT it. So where is this additional code? There is none.

The DB2_PARALLEL_IO parm is a DB2 registry variable that you set with the db2set command. To set it at the instance level, simply enter the following: db2set -i DB2_PARALLEL_IO=ON. To se all registry variables, enter: db2set -all.

The -i specifies that every database in the instance will use parallel IO. The message in your db2diag.log looks like a CPU not IO parallelism message. I'm not sure why this is occurring. One question might be, did you create this database via a redirected restore from another machine of different configuration? If so, you will need to set the database manager configuration parm CPUSPEED to -1. Then stop and start DB2. This will cause DB2 to recalculate the processor(s) available to it. Hope this helps, [...]

Each PIECE is a different file, not an extent, so in effect it is similar to the partitioning index. Biggest boost is to increase concurrency. IFI is answer to that. IFCID 106 gives DSNZPARM parameter. There are two easy way to do this -
1. Use your own IFI commands 2. Use a free-bee stored procedure DSNWZP. Installation job DSNTIJSG, which binds and define stored procedure. This runs under DB2 SPAS. To invoke use standard call - "CALL DSNWZP (:Host-var)" , The host-var is CHAR(8600). [...]

Using CAF is not as bad as you fear. You should sit ones to build yourself a small program example and afterwards it'll be much easier. If you plan to use "C" then beware of the syntax in the books as both V4 and V5 books has errors in the syntax, but if you read the other languages examples then you get it right. CAF performance is better then TSO.

(I cannot speak for CA's Log Analyzer, but,) BMC's Patrol DB-Log Master for DB2 for MVS does allow for user specification of DB2 logs no longer referenced in the BSDS. One caveat to consider if using either product in the mode of processing logs outside of the BSDS is whether or not your tables are defined with Data Capture Changes. I'd agree that if you have an access path problem in the normal operation of a system, then lying to DB2 isn't a sensible workaround.
But are you saying that faked statistics should not be used even for system build-up?
When you first put a system live, and there are no rows in the CUSTOMER_ORDER table, but you expect there to be 500,000 rows there after a month or two, is there not a case for taking the stats from your volume test environment and putting them into the production catalog? Has anyone successfully done a RECOVER TOCOPY of a tablespace from an image copy not recorded in SYSIBM.SYSCOPY? Seems to me the RECOVER utility might check to see if the copy was in SYSCOPY. We intend, for Y2K testing reasons, to delete it from SYSCOPY, but might need it for fallback purposes. It will remain catalogued. We then intend to do a LOGONLY recovery to a quiesce point we set after the copy. Regards, Rick [...]

Sure recovery checks for entry in SYSCOPY. Following ways to do this -
Traditional way - DSN1COPY without RESET option followed by LOGONLY recovery TORBA or TOLOGPOINT
Unusual way - While assembling DSNZPARM set SPRMCTU bit to X'80' (macro DSN6SPRC) to enable catalog update. Insert an entry in SYSCOPY and you should be able to recover as usual. [...]

If you delete the earliest image copy with the DB2 Modify utility, remember that this will also delete related SYSLGRNX entries for the space, making a subsequent RECOVER LOGONLY operation impossible without somehow bypassing SYSLGRNX. My question is, what are other people doing with the online reorg parameters, in particular MAXRO, LONGLOG and DELAY. I used to work with ADSM on AIX. We had Oracle for the database and used SQL-Backtrack to back up to ADSM. We want to have HSM migrate archive log datasets and image copies to tape as soon as they are produced, but are concerned with the effects of a massive recovery (if we are ever faced with such a task!). We are concerned that DB2 [...]

I would like to add few points on your answer. There is a slight difference the way CLASS 1 & CLASS 2 CPU time, works for CICS and other attachment facilities.
In CICS -> CLASS 1 - CLASS 2 CPU time usually indicate overhead due to attachment facility and application cpu is not included in CLASS 1 CPU. This means you need to tune your RCT. [...]

Check you DCS Database entry in DB2 Connect. When you catalog dcs db as the must match exactly to the LOCATION specified in the DB2 OS/390 boot strap dataset. Use DSNJU004 with the BSDS as input. Max to the bottom of the output for the DDF record, which will contain the LOCATION. Hope this helps, [...]

I need to delete some rows on a table... It has one column as its primary index (clustered) The table has been re-orged, and runstats have been performed.
The table has delete constraint rules with another table...and this is a parent table. The respective rows have been deleted from the child table both tables have approx 45 million rows each [...]

How many of the rows will be deleted? It is possible that DB2 is not using the index due to more than 60% (somewhere in that range) of the data rows will be accessed, making a tablespace scan more efficient. I don't know if this is your case or not. Any other suggestions, folks? [...]

Actually I may have used a misnomer by calling it API and not been technically correct. I think it should be called CICS thread sub-task switch time.
Akira Shibamiya quotes and extra 0.2 millisecs of CPU overhead per SQL (on 180J stabdard machine) when CICS processing.
I still believe that this overhead per SQL shows in the difference between Class 1 and Class 2 CPU, and therefore this difference is largely (may be not exclusively) proportional to no. of SQLs executed if all is well. [...]

DB2OCAT creates a separate catalog(s) that your interactive ODBC/JDBC users can use so they never obtain any locks on the real catalog.

From the V5 manual, it suggests there should be other messages (presumably in MSTR or DBM1 joblog) and/or an SVC dump associated with this problem.
Have a look and see if there are any more clues.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 00E40030

We are starting to investigate the use of "enhanced" DB2 catalog statistics to improve access to our DW and other tables. By "enhanced", I mean specifying non-default options for RUNSTATS or the third-party equivalent: TABLE, INDEX, COLUMN, KEYCARD, even use of the DSTATS program and manually inserting data. [...]
