This is how we handle the creation of the compression dictionaries. Because there is one compression dictionary per partition, we where faced with the creation of over a 1,200 compression dictionaries for a similar situation like yours. I developed the following. I have created a 'mother' compression dictionary tablespace by loading some samples in and than followed by a reorg, to create a better dictionary. Reorg uses all the rows to create the compression dictionary, load only so many to fill the compression dictionary. We're running something similar, with a few larger tablespaces being DMS and the rest SMS, on a Solaris server. So far, we're pleased. I've done some SMS tablespace bufferpool isolation to help performance.

Yes, creating your indices in a separate tablespace will help performance in that it will enable you to easily separate the indices from the tables both on the DASD and in the bufferpool. I have tended to use this technique on the larger tables in a database. This means you must define the tablespaces as DMS (database-managed) instead of SMS (system-managed). We have many tables keyed by a CHAR(08) column. The values for this column are generated by a program that uses the timestamp to generate a unique, random number. Of course when put in the CHAR(08) column, the value is unreadable. One of our DBAs has raised the suggestion that this column would be more efficient from an access perspective if the column were defined as FLOAT. Sort is invoked when a cursor is opened for a SELECT statement that requires sorting. The maximum size of the sort work area allocated for each concurrent sort user depends on the value you specified for the SORT POOL SIZE field on installation panel DSNTIPC.

The default is 10% the sum of Virtual Bufferpools BP0 , BP1 ...BP32K It is possible for a sort to complete in the buffer pool without I/Os. One easy way is to place Plan Analyzer into the compile/bind jobstep. I can even be set up to run based on 'as if' it were compiled production - what paths woudl be selected. The difficult part is to get application folks to review the printed output report and look at the high-cost statements and table scans. I don't think stopping RLF after the query has started will do any good. It is my understanding that when the query begins executing, DB2 queries RLF to determine the appropriate limit. Any changes made after the query is running won't affect it.

Check the Administration Guide for V5 page 4-189. It does not suggest your method. You may have to use SQL to unload your table before using the LOAD utility due to the fact that you are dropping the tablespace (OBID's may change when re-creating).

On another note you may want to create additional dummy partitions with negative key values for future use. These would come in handy if re-partitioning needs to be done again. The dummy partitions could be used without dropping the tablespace. There is no optimal value. As in all things in DB2 'it depends'. The max value is '255'. One general rule of thumb is to fit as many rows on a page as possible to reduce I/O. my suggestion would be to wait until you get V6 .. "apparently" the V6 IBM on-line reorg code is "supposed" to perform a lot quicker than the V5 on-line Reorg code and in addition at the switch phase there is meant to be some "new" method of switching the dataset names in the DB2 catalog such that the switch will only take a matter of micro seconds .. I think that the internal DB2 code will "hold up" all claimers on the Catalog so that they do not time out .. and then it will change the dataset name [...] 14556 17 14_RE : Sort Pool0_31_truman.g.brown@BELLATLANTIC.COM30_Fri, 3 Dec 1999 10:33:36 -0500416_us-ascii Joel,

My understanding is that the new functionality allows the online reorg to proceed without having to drain read claims at the end of the log apply phase. The readers will continue to use the 'old' copy of the data until they commit or complete. Both the old and the new datasets will be registered in the catalog, presumably the old copy will be removed some time after the last read claim has gone. There are also enhancements to make the switch phase a lot quicker. I've used File-Aid/DB2 and RC/Edit. Both are good tools, but I prefer FA/DB2. If your shop has other File-Aid products the DB2 component may be a good fit. The ISPF like functions to edit, browse and copy data are easy to use. Also, FA/DB2 has a SQL Analysis component to work with explains, so you get the equivalent of RC/Edit and Plan Analyzer. Starting with v6.1 the NT DB2 Control Center is running under the account associated with the NT Service called something like "JAVA Applet Control Center Service". The NT DB2 Command Line Processor is not. When I did an upgrade install the NT service was installed to run under the NT SYSTEM account. The SYSTEM account does not have SYSADM authority. Try changing the "JAVA Applet Control Center Service" (on the client) to run under the db2admin account of the server. We have several user acceptance databases which contain many static tables. These tables are loaded from production down to UA once each week. The static tables in production are only updated once every 1 or two weeks. The UA static tables are only used for retrieval only.

We believe that creating aliases, in the UA environment, to the production tables would serve the same purpose and eliminate the need to reload the UA tables each week. When going across subsystems DB2 has to jump thru some extra hoops. Either the SQL is dynamic (access path calculated at every execution) or you have to create a separate module that is statically bound, but then you have to do a DB2 CONNECT to the remote subsystem (and back). So using and ALIAS to cross Subsystems can be done, but it will give you a very different access path (and response time) than using a table, view [...] 19420 36 45_Re: How can I access DB2 directly from ReXX??11_Kwan, James18_James_Kwan@BMC.COM30_Mon, 6 Dec 1999 17:13:10 -0600514_ISO-8859-1 DB2 V6 comes with a REXX interface or if you have a BMC utility, you can have a light version of RxD2 REXX interface.

The simplest approach to obtain the last 5 digits is: SELECT SUBSTR(DIGITS(CHG_TO_COUNT),11,5) But that will still return you the leading zeros if the value is less than 5 digits. Alternatively, use SELECT DECIMAL(CHG_TO_COUNT,5) This will fail if the original value is greater than 5 digits (which the substr would truncate anyway), but it does remove leading zeroes. We have lost a production DBRM and do not have the source and are desperately looking to rebuild it quickly. We are currently on DB2 V5.1 running on OS 390. Any help is appreciated. You have exceeded 16 million RIDS and there is no way to change that limit. If you really need to qualify over 16 million rids, then disallow list prefetch and use another index access as long as you are not going to exceed 25% of the tablespace. If more than 25% of the tablespace, then use sequential prefetch. [...] 21959 78 14_DBD Corruption10_Paul Fegan23_Paul.Fegan@CITEC.COM.AU30_Wed, 8 Dec 1999 08:52:59 +1000533_US-ASCII Hi,

I have a question about DBD corruption. We reciently had a problem with QMF temporay table (ie the QMF proc erases the last set of data using ERASE .... and runs a query and save the new set). The table could not be erased in QMF and could not be dropped using normal means. After a lot of stuffing around I ran a REPAIR DBD TEST ... and found that the DBD was stuffed or at least the catalog and DBD nolonger matched. Since the DBD contained OBD's that weren't present in the catalog I figured there was no [...] 22038 92 49_Re: How can I access DB2 directly from ReXX?? When you say "We have lost a production DBRM" I'm presuming that you have lost the DBRM in the PDS and not the copy of the DBRM in the DB2 catalog. Am I guessing correct?

If you lost the DBRM, have you lost the LOAD also? Was A precompile performed? [...] 22281 73 31_Re: SAP Question using SNAPSHOT9_Jo K.Nash17_jo.k.nash@USA.NET28_Tue, 7 Dec 1999 21:49:39 EST352_US-ASCII John,

Sorry for the late reply. I took a month vacation before Y2K halts all vacations for a while. Oh well..

I started to answer your questions with a yes, but then realized that you were not talking about BMC's snapshot rather hardware snapshot. It gets confusing with BMC and hardware competing for use of the same term. It seems from your reply that you might appreciate the attached poem by Goethe on the subject of overworking for money. (See attached file: Goethe00.wpd).

However, the scalar subquery delivering the value for the set has not been implemented in OS/390 yet, although an APAR on UPDATE/SET has been recently closed.

SET NROW.COL1 = SELECT COL1 FROM DBATEST.MASTER_TABLE WHERE MASTER_KEY = NROW.MASTER_KEY OPTIMIZE FOR 1 ROW FOR READ ONLY;
